Drop of unique downloads and thus Mod Rewards since Jan '22

Dear all,

sorry if this has already been discussed or if this is the wrong subforum.

Did someone else also note a drop of the number of unique downloads and thus the mod rewards linked to this number? Since January it is only going down. I don't have much but the unique downloads dropped from something around 1000 to 251 in January, then 47 in February and 28 in March... This is a change be more than 95%. So, from this point of view, the new system with collections seems to be a real problem at least for me...

Some feedback from other mod authors would be very much appreciated.

Thanks & Cheerio

I'm not really sure you can blame Collections for this. If anything the Collections system would see an increase in downloads, but a slight drop-off in page views. To add to this I'm not even sure your mod is included in any Collections at the moment?

I notice your only recent mod is for Skyrim 2011, so I would say the decline of a mixture of the following factors.

  • The Skyrim "LE" player base has been declining slowly ever since Skyrim SE came out. Most players are now on the new version of the game. With less players for the old game, your download counts would being heading down too. Collections are also a clear indicator that Skyrim LE isn't that popular anymore with only 4 Collections versus 120+ for SE.
  • The mod hasn't been updated since 2019, so anyone who is interested in it may already have it. Older mods are also somewhat harder to find on the site (there's not a great solution for that).
  • It's getting towards summer in the Northern hemisphere (where most of the Nexus Mods users live) so people are more likely to be doing things other than playing on PC.
  • COVID restrictions worldwide are being relaxed. Similar to the above, less people are stuck inside and may be taking a break from gaming.
  • It's possible your mod was listed in some kind of modding guide hosted off site (in a YouTube video or just some random forum) which lead to the spike in 2019, but it has since either been removed from the guide or the guide itself no longer exists. I imply this from the same spike in April 2019 on the mod your patch requires.

Put simply, I think you're misplacing the "blame" with Collections - this seems like a coincidence in timing. Correlation does not always imply causation.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry for the late reply. First things first: I'm not blaming anyone or something, but I was wondering. I specifically asked if other people experienced the same. And if there is a drop by 95% and at the same time a new system is introduced (which I don't understand in every detail since I didn't care) there could be a link... Again, please notice the "could"... Yes, there could be other reasons and in the end there probably are other reasons... And I have enough points left to buy 2 or 3 more interesting games, so I got more from the donation points than I ever anticipated. Still, I'm just curious if someone else has such a problem  And btw: I'm a scientist in RL, that's why I know that "Correlation does not always imply causation." :D

Nevertheless, thanks for the answers

Edit: OK, re-reading my original message, it sounds as if I'm really "pissed" by the new system but this was meant more in a sarcastic way.

I've experienced the YouTube thing myself, this spike matches the date one of my mods was used in a video with 250,000 views. I can also see where Oldrim downloads would suffer, a similar thing has happened with Fallout 3, the Tale of Two wastelands mod adds Fallout 3 as a mod to Fallout New Vegas, as a result the demand for actual Fallout 3 mods has declined.
