The creator of SkyUI dropped off the face of the earth in 2017, leaving SkyUI without any further updates despite the fact it seriously needs them.

Someone has to fork it.

You'd need the original authors permission and permission from everyone whose assets were used.

The original author may be gone, forking it is fair use and he is free to merge the changes into his own code if he asks politely.

"fair use" has nothing to do with mod ownership.  At the least it would be a violation of Nexus TOS.

The "if he asks politely" while advocating using their code without asking at all is just laughably rude.

There is nothing wrong with forking unsupported code with proper attribution, this is not stealing mods and passing them off as your own.

If he has an issue with it then he has to come out and say something, and I think he should say something as discussions such as this apparently cause drama on this site.

His "say something" is in the permissions and credits section on the mod page. He doesn't need to show up and repeat it every time someone discusses using the work without permission.

Seems like there's a list of people in the permission and credits tab. I'm sure at least one of them will know something if you ask them about it. Who knows, maybe the author of the mod hasn't played the game in years and doesn't know that there are issues? Seems like you can probably change it with attribution but as long as you use your own assets. It's a bit difficult to tell what you can and can't do.

Alternatively, a new UI system could be made to replace it :P

But yeah, ask the author what's up and send a message to the others who helped this project. Someone is bound to answer the phone.
