CRASH FREE Skyrim

i came up with this simple method to test my mod-heavy skyrim [230 mods at current]

1st - start a fresh new game

2nd - fast travel to Whiterun

3rd - steal your favorite horse (i think there is only one )

4th - sprint to Rorikstead

ps. be sure to check post no.7 for more useful software apps that will aid your Skyrim setup

Note: i make one save game after reaching the Whiterun stables, with as little mods active as possible, this i use as a base template (just to be sure that it's script-free)

Then i can make an additional save with my MCM setup, ie. activating mods, like Frostfall and Hunterborn, and setting up spawn numbers, like Skyrim More Spawns,

i then use this save game to load all my future mod tests, that way i end up saving a lot of time during testing

i also use Mod Organizer to setup specific base compilations [profiles]

- one for animation tests

- one for creature tests

- and then the Uber-one for the full setup (best to build this one up in increments, so you can always roll-back when things go hay-wire)

and when things start getting really tough, just add 3 mods at a time, that way the elimination process becomes a lot easier on you

i always keep an open Notepad handy to record every step i take, this helps me track back, to see where things went wrong, or simply in helping me make the next decision

When you have a setup that works, remember to make a backup of your profile, it's easy to make a mess of things (and don't forget to give yourself a smack on the back )

The good news is if you make it all the way to Rorikstead (about 2-3 minutes on a horse), chances are that you have a stable Skyrim, ready to play for hours on end!

( That is unless you are using quest or world-space mods which edit specific areas of Skyrim, in which case this method won't cover that. In general, my mods are focused on: encounters, weapons, gameplay, immersion, audio and visuals. You can take a look at my full list in my next post with a pic attached )

Hope that this little tip helps all you fellow Skyrimers

Happy Dungeon Hacking

[ i think this was a screenshot i took from the previous Kountervibe ENB, the new one looks even better still ]

230 mods ??? youre crazy

ill bet 1 months salary that the longer you get in game youll get a bucketfull of dirty edits and then trouble starts.

ill consider my game stable with 120 mods and 4 ctd a week

your suggestion takes less than a hour to complete, what do you think your game would look like when cornered 1200 hours of play like me

Tell me youre using boss and tes5edit youll need them

hahah, yeah, it might break, but if it does, i will drop a few of my visual or audio mods,
or maybe just lower my spawn counts with Skyrim More Spawns [fantastic mod btw]
this way i will not leave any unwanted scripts in my game files
Warning! BOSS will break the encounter compilation, that is, all the spawn instances,
this encounter compilation took many weeks to order correctly,
trust me on this one
[this was a tip i still picked up from the author of ENB Kountervibe]
i do however use BOSS as a starting guideline, and follow all its listed suggestions, especially as far as conflicts go
TES5Edit i only used for the main Skyrim files, the other mods did not warrant the use, according to BOSS
Another tip which i picked up somewhere .... always use high-quality mods if you can

here is a peek at my full list

As you can see, i don't have any DragonBorn, Dawnguard, or Hearthfire patches for any of my mods (except maybe two)

This way i can use more and more mods, as the game uses less resources (took me a long time to decide on that)

One more thing to share with the Skyrim community

Here a some software apps that really helped me get Skyrim running to its fullest potential:

1: Onetweak - this will get your Skyrim running in Windowed mode (with this i was able to get higher FPS, especially in indoor cells.

Remember to disable fullscreen mode in your ini)

2: GameBooster - from Razer (this will optimize your Windows and free more resources)

3: Mz CPU Accelerator (this nifty app will proritize your CPU usage, giving Skyrim everything your hardware has to offer )

4: MyDefrag (great piece of software for faster disk defrag times)

5: CCleaner (use this for safely cleaning your registry, and general system maintenance)

6: Skyrim Performance Monitor (handy app that will help you see when your V-RAM is being over-taxed)

7: Use Medium game settings for your initial ini (of course there are settings you will want to increase )

i can't remember the exact mod or link, but there was one ENB author who published a bunch of optimized ini's, specificly for ENB users, i used these as a base template

8: Just found this one. Create a shortcut of your executable, if it's SKSE, then make a shortcut of that, then add "+fullproc" in the 'location' section, under 'properties' (this tells Skyrim to utilize your multi-core setup)

9: Hardware Overclocking - this one really helped big-time (just be sure to read reliable documents on this, and get the correct software to help you)

i used AMD Overdrives Auto-Tune feature to get stable and tested values, then took the HT-Ref Clock value and manually inputed that into my BIOS

Then it's all good to go [with AMD overdrive, the CPU will never come close to its max temp, so it is a safe method, in my experience. and it's made by the hardware manufacturers for the hardware]

Also, be sure to install the latest BIOS, Chipset drivers, video drivers, and sound drivers for your setup

For the GPU overclock, i used the official software application only (Nvidia provides the software on their website, Nvidia System Tools)

Find reliable sources on the internet for your specific cards stable overclocking values, ones which have been tried and tested

Notably, the Geforce cards have a lot of untapped potential here

i am using a GTS 450, and got about a 10FPS increase from doing this,

Max Temperatures for graphics cards tend to be quite a general value,

but CPU's vary greatly, so again, be sure to check for the correct values according to your manufacturer

[check the post by Treplos below for an alternate view]

GPU helped FPS --- CPU helped adding more content & spawns

(i have a stock cooler on my AMD CPU, i just use HW Monitor to keep an eye on my temps for sanity reasons, but they never climb too high at all)

10: When all else fails, play some online Chess, this has helped me stacks when searching my mind for answers which i could not find. And always remember that Google is your best ally

That is a pretty pic and those are a lot of mods! I wish my laptop was better to run Skyrim as beautifully as some of the pics I keep seeing. It is only mid-range and cannot handle that many mods, especially eye candy ones .

As a general warning, do NOT attempt to over-clock anything on your system, unless you know what you are doing and also have adequate power from your PSU and adequate cooling. Even though modern parts, like motherboards, have some form of protection, OCing can still damage your system or components and it is just not worth it, unless you have taken precautions. Also, some systems come pre-OC'ed, so you should be careful.

Lastly, insert your list in spoiler tags dude lol

[spoiler]your list[/spoiler]
