WarRatsG Posted November 12, 2013 Share Posted November 12, 2013 My take on this is that "relative truth" will exclusively relate to something arbitrary, such as morals or politics. They are abstract concepts, not physical realities. A nihilist would say these kinds of things do not exist, an existentialist would say they only have no intrinsic/absolute value. No matter how you define it, they differ from something entirely real; such as the energy change of a specific chemical reaction, the current distance between two specific objects, or that every force has an equal and opposite. These things, although there may be different methods of expressing it (imperial vs metric, for example), cannot be disputed. It simply is. You can argue semantics and definitions, but the truth remains unchanged.The point I'm making is that if it is a "relative" truth then it is not true at all. Nor is it untrue. One cannot assign any degree of truth to these concepts. If you could, it would most likely be cancelled out by the exceptions and varying shades of falsehood. So I suppose it is impossible to truly debate a truth - a truth cannot be disputed. screendrop Posted November 15, 2013 Share Posted November 15, 2013 Relative truth largely depends on what constitutes "relative" are therefore, the ascertaining provision of relative truth is also dependent on subsequent interpretations of relative truth.Is relative truth the concept that nothing exists objectively?Is it the idea that nothing exists objectively to a subject?Is it the idea that not every thing exists subjectively, but truth is subjective?The concept that there is nothing valuable in truth other than the way it is interpreted?Depending on how relative truth is defined, or undefined will suggest the direction of how one may obtain "relative" truth.
