[Insert Location Name] is being attacked! AND? Am I supposed to care?

I'm still rather new to Fallout 4. I don't play it very often because my computer is old, so my frame-rate is usually fluctuating between 7 and 12. It's cool, though. I treat it as a zombie apocalypse and just move slowly and stealthily through the many areas. Since my texture settings are set as low as they can go, a lot of places tend to look exactly the same (muddy and grim), so it often happens that I find myself completely lost.

I've never been to Concord, never spoken to the great quest-giving beast wearing the cowboy hat, so I felt quite safe from being exposed to the settlement system. After exploring a good bit of the map, however, I'm starting to receive notifications from various places saying they need my help. "Finch Farm" and so forth.

What's the deal? I don't have any settlements! I don't WANT any settlements. Yeah, I saved someone's kidnapped wife from raiders once, but that doesn't mean that their whole family pod should suddenly be entrusted to my care! "What? Where? Who? When I did ever...?"

I am so confused. And slightly irate. Does FO4 just force you to take part in the settlement system no matter what?

Check in your pipboy to see what workshops you have. I don't know if they actually show up if you never activate them though..... But, doing the quests for the settlements, tends to have them align with you, whether you want them or not.

And of course, settlers in FO4 are notoriously incapable of doing ANYTHING for themselves...... I am impressed they can actually feed themselves without someone holding the spoon for them.....

Hiya Lollia :)

Welcome to fallout 4 :)

Ok, so. Just in case that you did actually inadvertantly help the settlers a bit too much, here's a mod that can help you out.

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/31625

SKK put together a really good mod that gives you all kinds of tons of options as far as settlements.

Including the option

to Disown the bastiches!

I've played this game on a couple of really old laptops. I can feel your pain there.

For the lagginess of having an older machine, I'ma recommend these mods to you.

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/67 I dunno if this really helped or not.

Thank you so much for pointing this out! I had no idea there was a section on the pipboy for this sort of thing. Turns out that I have no less than FOUR workshops listed. And at least three of them have angry icons next to their names. Oops! :whistling:

Always happy to find more FPS-saving goodness! :D

I already have most of what you have listed, but I did spy a couple more to experiment with, so it looks like I'll be doing some downloading! That workshop utilities mod looks excellent, too. There's a lot of information to take in, though, so I will read through it carefully before I give it a whirl. If it can't save me now, it may still be a big help when I start a fresh game, so thank you very much for linking to it.

You can also just build some stuff in the settlements and you will get rarely any kind of quest, or settlement attacks. They just need the basics for that.

Aka. enough water, beds, food and safety. To be safe, I build always enough turrets so that I have water+food+settlers (in numbers), after I have enough from the settlement attacks and quests. Also something to make them happy would help. Aka. a bar and a cat as a minimum^^.

The attacks and quests themselfs are good income sources for caps, eps and ressources for settlements and sometimes power armor building/repairing. I don't have anything against them

Heya Lollia
Always glad to try to help out. Like I said, I know the pain of playing on an older system  I definitely hope that some of those help out! :D

I wanna expand on what Taryl is saying about settlement attacks.

Here's something that a lot of peeps don't find out til they've been playing the game for a while. For building up settlement defense.

If you are at the settlement when it gets attacked, then the enemies will start outside the settlement, and attempt to proceed inwards, normally.

If you are Not at the settlement, get the alert, and then fast travel to said settlement... then... because of the time difference that fast travel induces... the game will teleport said enemies into a spawn point INSIDE the settlement.

There's several utilities available that can either cause the spawn points to show up as visible objects, and there are utilities that can MOVE those spawn points.

But its good to know where those spots are, and then build your automated weaponry around those points, as well as the ones of where they originally spawn.

For outward defenses I recommend heavy saturation with mini guns machineguns (I forgot, the minigun turrets I have are from a mod) rocket launchers.

For inward defenses, I recommend laser turrets. (the big ones, not the little wall/ceiling mounts) Those are usually more accurate, and don't cut down your population quite as bad, with friendly fire.

Well, yeah, kinda. You can only prevent it by ignoring all quests involved. Including helping the people at concord right at the start.

Like others pointed out, you can do things to make it easier, or outright disown them with a mod. If they get angry enough, the settlers will do so themselves

To prevent attacks from occurring all that much (besides modding the attacks out entirely) there is a balance to be created. The probability of attack depends on the resources present. Lots of food = attack, and defense weapons.

As long as you keep the number of defense higher as the number of settlers, food & water combined, you will hardly ever get attacked. If you do get attacked, you can ignore it relatively unharmed. (you might have to do some repairs later) but the settlers generally appreciate it if you pop up and help.

I don't mind when it happens when exploring, but it frequently happens when your right in the middle of something. So annoying.

I would like to add that for (actual) defense, you can use walls and stuff to create choke points.

& put turrets up high. They have better 'reach' and los to targets + safe(r ) from melee attacks. I use scaffolding a lot for that.

edit:

Don't forget to give armor & weapons to your settlers (at least the guards). They only need 1 bullet in their inventory... It helps.

You can even have them wear power armor.

Which reminds me, always remove the core from any power armor you leave.

If you don't want any settlers to take it during an attack. (& out in the field it might get stolen)

THIS. Very much This!

But yes, also very true about placing your turrets up high. Ranged guards, as well.

Second bennie of that, is that only invaders with ranged weapons can hit them. Not invaders with melee attacks. Which may increase your kill count, and potentially reduce the amount of repairs that you end up having to do on them.

Depending on your own personality, you can also just go in and kill off the settlers at said settlement, and then just never open the workshop menu there, if you don't want the place. Tho, with this strategy, I wouldnt recommend doing so with some of the more "goody goody" companions in tow.

Or really, any of them. All of them have murder flags.

For myself, there's only really a few settlements that I have any real interest in, IF I have any interest. You can youtube search Best settlements Fallout 4 to see which ones are worth having, and then worst settlements fallout 4 to see which ones, really aren't worth the time.
