area 51 is intel based two, cant you get twice the processing power with an amd athlon 64? or is 64 bit not that much better than 32?

You can't YET because microsoft haven't released the 64-bit version of windows XP, but when they do, people might actually look at making 64-bit software. I believe the next unreal tournament game will be available in 64-bit flavour - of course by that time, most mid range 64 bit processors will be too slow, but AMD say they're sticking with socket 939 motherboards for some time, so if you get one of those it's pretty future proof.

Oh, and Athlon 64 processors kick ass in directX 9 applications (i.e. games).
