I go to solitude to do the Wolfskull cave quests, I return to Whiterun to store all my loot and stuff, but here's the strange part: The door to Breezehome does not function, I hit the E key to let me in, but it keeps playing the (can't use) sound effect each time I try, and I can't enter breezehome at all. It turned out to be caused by the Open Cities Skyrim mod that I was using (and have since abandoned because of this issue). I realize this reply comes quite late, and the OP might have moved on, but perhaps it will help someone googling for an answer.
