I don't see the point of all the character customisation at the start in a game specifically designed to keep the player's character looking like something out of a straight-to-VHS horror flick. Especially given it occurs after the very first death. I've taken to hoarding effigies and just using them as healing items (as distinct from the Estus and gems), just to avoid 'the ugliness'.
