Getting Over Cheating

I've done several searches on this topic here but didn't find any real in-depth discussion about it, so if there actually is one, feel free to post it here to correct me. Otherwise, I would like this thread to hopefully be "that" thread that I hoped I could find on it.

I want to talk about something a bit psychological - cheating (in Skyrim), and I hope that this thread can be the place for anyone to post advice, and read advice about "getting over the urge to cheat" so that the game can be more thoroughly enjoyed.

I confess that, while I have played through most of the game without cheating, there came a point where I wanted just a taste of a cheat to help me a little... and eventually, I found myself in a downward spiral wanting to experience "power" as immediately as possible, to know what I could do with all the spells, perks, and even the nicest homes - to be a real "god of men" among Skyrim. Thinking about it was always exciting, but dumb, since I was a bit blinded from its cons. After that, the real genuine experience of Skyrim was pretty ruined, most of the mystery and vastness of the game spoiled... at least a better portion of it was.

As much as I had, and fell to, the urge to cheat, I actually didn't ever want to. The real reason I had the urge to cheat, was actually the reason not to cheat - to have the most potential fun that the game can provide. For me it was mostly a matter of impatience to use the more tedious mechanics in the game such as crafting, etc, and faith in myself to work up to the levels of skill manually.

Whether or not they post here, there are people like me viewing this forum, this topic, and probably wanting a way out of the urge to cheat. I want to ask for advice from you guys about escaping it. But just for the record, It's not always as simple as "Well, just stop cheating", since we have to identify the source for the urge to cheat - to have everything given to us instantly instead of working for it.

So, two questions...

- Do you/have you ever, sometimes, maybe frequently feel the urge to open the console and cheat?

- Outside of saying "Just stop cheating", what advice can you give to get over this urge to cheat?

Once I hit max level lockpicking, I started cheating with unlocking things. I mean, the lockpick minigame was fun the first 400 houres, but after that it became a chore.

I also admit to cheating when cornered. Quicksaving mid dungeon, getting insta-gibbed 0.5 second after the save. Happened a lot, really.

Oh, and when a difficult enemy is annoying me. Like a dragon flying on roof forever, when on my #dual wield -dadreic -dual daedra -conjuration - warrior-kind-of-a-guy".

Uh.. stop cheating?

I mean, what else can we say? It's a question of willpower here.

Yes I do, but I just go on a rampage and install 100 armor mods F up my Skyrim install then get bored of cheating and go back to playing. (side effects may include constant crashing, full hard drives and overloaded forge menus)

Get into moding, forget the consul commands, get back into playing Skyrim, don't look up the consul commands ??? profit.

Also getting Hearthfire and meticulously making a house or 3 without cheating can get you into the habit of doing things normally.

If you want to take it that way, I'd say look for Real-Life issues. When you need the feel of being a total over-lord in a fantasy world, maybe there's something in the real world that makes you feel powerless, and you need to compensate?

naah, just kidding, that's basic curiosity and after maybe one or two cheating playthroughs you'll get over it.

But I think these commands are actually pretty useful to help overcome bugs in the game or from mods.

I find these threads a fascinating psychological exploration. The phrases "can't resist", "didn't want to", "too easy to cheat" are some of the most common.

The only person you're "cheating" is yourself. If you don't have the willpower to not open the console...remove the tilde key from your keyboard.

Don't take this the wrong way, but the 'can't resist' excuse is the same thought processes that ends up getting stickers which read "do not strike yourself in the face with hammer" placed on hammers

yes you CAN resist the urge. yes you CAN help it

I wanted a house mod but didn't have the money required at that point. I opened an account at the Console Bank of Skyrim. Got an excellent deal on the mortgage, I leave the rags and iron daggers on my victims and the Bank has a group of moonlighting Thalmor (following me, but out of sight) collect it for the bank until the debt is paid. Perks of being Dragonborn I guess. (fiscal immersion)

At one point I never fast traveled and thought the carriage rides were semi cheating. After awhile, you change as necessary. I suppose the trick is don't cheat on the game play itself or anything that gives a major dollop of guilt.

what is the definition of cheating

i gave some of my characters some gear a few times at the start of the game

or when none of the blacksmiths in skyrim suddenly ran out of steel and i mean NONE had a single ingot of steel i gave my character some

and on few occasions early in the game i did lower the difficulty of the game because that damn bear chief kept killing my character instantly each time i tried to pass that area ( i really really hate bears in this game)

but is ths cheating when the game designers gave you the codes

you can say that using mods is cheating aswell

Although we all understand the word "cheating", in the sense of using the console command, which are not given to use for fun, but used BY the game designers themself to beta test/debug their game.

That said, Kleinstaff do got a point. the definition of cheating is to gain advantage in an unfair way. That means a competition of some sort is a given. So under all logic, "cheating" in a single player game, affecting only yourself, is impossible.

If it bothers you, then don't use the console. However, there are times when you may get stuck somewhere because of a flaw in the game scenery or game engine mechanics. Is it really 'cheating' to TCL out of that spot? Or should you just allow your character to languish there forever?

It's your game - play it the way you want.
