Please help - Skyrim lag issue never encountered before

First I'll start by saying thank you in advance for taking the time to read this post. I have been Googling my brain into a fine paste over the past few days trying to figure this out.

I have a 3 GHZ Dual Core with 4 Gigs of Ram and a GeForce GT 620 with 2 Gigs of Vram. Obviously it isn't the best setup for a game like Skyrim, but the thing is, I played Skyrim A LOT on this machine as recently as last year, with all DLC installed and over 20 mods including music and weather overhauls (CoT, PsyRim, CBBE, Enhanced Night Sky...) -- and I was able to play this comfortably at medium settings.

Well, I decided to get the game on Steam again, straight Vanilla, no DLC, no mods, and right from the start it is choppy as hell. And to add insult to injury it is choppy on the lowest settings. Even with Minecraft-looking shadows and view distance set to Mr Magoo

How is it possible the quality has decreased when I am running less -- no DLC or plethora of mods

What can I do to lessen the choppy and lag? Its like being drunk under a strobe light I swear

Hi, for starters..one thing most forget.....After the Download, First thing, restart the computer, On a fresh start-up. Defrag. ....(NEVER Defrag an SSD).

Drivers can cause choppy, laggy play,

Things running in background.....

Steams extras, ....cloud, Overlays , chat.

Check for Virus,

Check System is Running with minimal CPU usage before starting game.

Doesn't really improve, but thanks for mentioning this. I really needed to do a defrag anyways
