When the playstation cheif Ken Kutaragi announced the simultaneous launch of PS3 he, said that buying the PS3 would require its fanbase to work a few extra hours to come up with the extra cash to buy one. The exspense is being put down to the BD-drive and all the new technology that comes with it. Also in light of the Sony france chief letting slip that the PS3 will cost around €499 and €699 is it really worth it?

I probably won't be able to buy it when it's first out anyway, but yeah, I'm sure I'll still buy it. IMO the Playstation has always been by far the best console around, so I'll end up getting it. I'm not sure how Euros convert to Pounds Sterling though, isn't it roughly halved? In which case 499-699 Euros wouldn't be drastically more expensive than usual.

unless sony sells it for over $900, they'll be losing money on every one they sell. This might be it for sony - pretty soon they'll be in a position to be bought out.

and no, I won't be buying one - i have to move out, pay off my debt, buy a new laptop, and by 2008 i plan on travelling overseas.

I've always been anti-Playstation, 'cos I've been much more into N64 and XBoX, (I've had PS1 and have PS2, but the Nintendo and Microsoft systems have been far superior IMHO) but one very strong point in favor of PS3 is retro-compatibility, which XBoX 360 seems to have bggered up completely. either way, I'm gonna wait at least another 6-12 months to make the decision, unless I can pick up a cheap second-hand 360 from somewhere.........

Had a look at the conversion rates, in sterling roughly 346.611 GBP

to 485.581 GBP. I think the upper is a bit steep, but i guess when you put it into prespective its not too bad. True HD graphics, high capacity Blu-ray disks and a 60GB HDD (i think), It may work out cheaper than buying the 360 core, then buying the extras later. That brings me to another thought, surely microsoft bringing out two tiers of the system is a bit silly, its like the expansion slot on the PS2, there was the hype of having a HDD in your PS2 but how many people actually bought one?? Obviously it found a good use with the network card. I thnik there will be a similar view with the 360, the premium package will just be neglected by the masses who will opt for the core, because a) it plays the games and b) its cheaper, the extras such as a HD-DVD external drive is stupid, people will only buy it if microsoft suddenly says that there will stop using DVDs on all games and opt for HD-DVD, i dont think so. In all the price for the PS3 may seem a bit steep, but weigh up all the new technology with a 2.5 Gen 360 console then your laughing.

I fear that im being slightly one sided so Xbox does have a kickass online network, i only hope sony mange to make theirs just as good and then we will have a truly 3rd gen console...mmmmm.

Out.

I've always preferred the XBox; don't know why. Loved the N64 as well for 2 games alone: Goldeneye and Perfect Dark ... I remember wasting away whole weekends with friends playing those two games.

I've always been a firm believer in it not being whats in the box, but what's being played on the box. Stick me infront of a big TV with Goldeneye and I'll probably have more fun than with most current gen games.

I'll buy one at about the time hell freezes over. I hate consoles to begin with, and putting the price up to the point where I could afford some nice computer upgrades instead is really not helping their case. $600-850 is just disgustingly overpriced, and kills the single advantage (really cheap cost) a console has over the PC.

True that true that, love going back and playing those retro games, there was a time when i thought my spectrum was the dogs B, loved back 2 skool, the original stealth game.

I love the gadgets and the stats and titles i couldnt do without, MGS, GT, FF, SOCOM. Yeah the PC can do it all, but I love to buy a game that i know works on my machine and will always, im prepared to take the hit in a few years time when the grpahics arent on par with the PC but at least i know that the next game i buy will work and it'll be good.

  • 6 months later...

yeah the technology in those 360 and ps3 box are newer graphic that is equivalent to dx10. so pc user is till waiting for it. it seem that these new consoles try to be a computer of its own with so much features. i would choose ps3 over xbox. first, xbox system never have any games i want to play. the ps3 have immense technology in it. more likely a very good sound chip. and little bonus like sacd support. hi-res video.

but i never buy consoles, and i can think of better things to spend $600 on. i dont want to go out of my way for these new high capacity formats. sony support blue-ray, but more consumers right now prefer hd dvd from what i gather.

if i have that much moeny at my disposal, i buy a psx and 15 good rpg.

Maybe when the world will end. I always been the Xbox boy, and perhaps always will. I really think that that price is exagerated, but sony has to get their money back somehow.

the extras such as a HD-DVD external drive is stupid, people will only buy it if microsoft suddenly says that there will stop using DVDs on all games

Thats not true. I would definetly buy the HD-DVD to go with my HD tv. I think that selling it separatly is a good idea. Not everyone has a HD tv in their house you know? And you will also get the advantage of having 2 dvd-roms. If one brakes, you remplace it with the other.

I fear that im being slightly one sided so Xbox does have a kickass online network,

I hate XboX Live, mainly for the fact that they instantetly banned me after I bought their 12 months subscription card. I didnt get to play one single day because of a minor hardware modification my xbox had before.

Permanent Ban. Microsoft's black list. MEH! What a waste of 100$.

Im looking forward to perhaps getting an X360. Maybe when Halo 3, Halo wars and Fable 2 is released. Then we'll see about Xbox Live...
