Oblivion ERA BUG

Recommended Posts

I noticed while reading In Skyrim that whenever Martin Septim sacrificed himself it shut the jaws of Oblivion, thus beginning the fourth era. So after leaving the temple of the one, shouldn't the time be 4E01 instead of 3E433? And I even tried to see if I could venture into the fourth era, and I can't. I got to the year 3E627, and the Era never changes.

So consider this either a mod request or a bug fix. The game itself broke the lore it seems because it never put you into the fourth era, which it already began after martin sacrificed himself, and your time on your map or wait menu still says 3E433 and above. Fixing this would mean realism, a good mod or long needed bug fix, my thanks, and the thanks of many others.

Oh my. Calling "this" a BUG really is a whole level of new one!

The idea to make this become the 4th era was created only "after" Oblivion's completion, likely several years later at best.

So when the game was designed it cannot possibly have been an oversight by the devs not to know what they might potentially decide to break lore with again several years later.

Blaming an old game for any lore breaking errors only introduced by its successors really is a far stretch.

Besides, Bethesda is known for every new release in the Elder Scrolls series to completely break all lore of the previous games, thus invalidating the concept of lore itself within the series.

It makes no sense paying too much attention to the lore in one game, as doing so now will only create a massive fallout when the next game in the series comes out and lore is completely rewritten from the grounds up again.

That being said, as a Mod Request, like for the sake of immersion, now that Skyrim is released and cannot be undone anymore, I could very well see this happen.

But keep in mind, the era didn't just suddenly switch right at that point. Rather the Elder Council decided several years later (we don't know when exactly, or do we?) to make Martin's death the end of the 3rd era and announce the current one to be the 4th. As we're talking about immersion already, the era changing already before anybody even decided to change it would again not be very immersive I think.

But that's just side notes.

Actually, I think TylerJayton2 has a point. In the ending scene where Martin has his final words, one of them is "The Third Age has ended, and a new age dawns." Link

So clearly Bethesda was aware that Oblivion ended the 3rd Era.

But it also makes sense that it would take time for the official Imperial calendar to reflect the change of Era. It isn't reasonable to say "Azzan went to bed on Morndas in the 3rd Era and woke up on Tirdas to find it was now the 4th Era. Why? Because some dude turned into a dragon and fought Goro's red-skinned cousin (he's called 'Doggone' or something), then turned into a statue of a dragon. So it's totally the 4th Era now."

It would take time (probably years) for the 4th Era to be formally declared, then retroactively dated to the day of Mehrunes Dagon's failed assault on the Imperial City. This delay would only be exacerbated by the many problems an Emperor-less empire runs into (seceding provinces, infighting among Council member & nobles, various factions vying for the throne, assassinations, natural & mystical disaster, mysterious islands appearing out of nowhere and vomiting insane people, etc.). For all we know, the 4th Era might not have been officially declared until Titus Mede captured the Imperial City and assumed the throne. That happened in 17 years after Dagon's defeat, which would put it at 3E 450 by the old calendar, and 4E 17 by the new calendar.

  • 1 year later...

The_Vyper you are likely right. But the thing is, I go 400 years into the future (by being freakin jailed, have no idea how I'm alive) So It's like, 3E 600 for me at some point... I looked at the construction set, I noticed a few things, the hour, month, and year, however, no era. Maybe with OBSE a plugin could be created, or just a mod to plugin after 3E 450? This taking time does make since, but the fact it isn't happening so far is annoying and sad.

(Sorry it took a bit for me to respond, thought Nexus would let me know if people commented ha ha)

If the Era is just a simple texture, and not a number, would it be possible to change with a script? Or just a plugin to put in after you feel like it?
