Skyrim Freezes when Loading Quicksaves, loads autosaves and hardsaves

So recently I've been having trouble with skyrim saves, about a week ago it would CTD whenever I tried to load a quickasave, but I fixed that by loading a previous save and making new quicksaves after that. This worked for a while but as of late the game can't load quicksaves at all. Whenever I select Continue or try to load a quicksave, I'll get to the loading screen and from there it'll either completely freeze after one of the game tips, or it will keep running but my game will never load and I'm perpetually stuck in the loading screen; either way, I have to ctrl+alt+delete to get out, and the game shows up as not responding in the task manager, then when I end the game Steam will tell me that Skyrim is syncing even though it never gets past 0% and I have to restart Steam. Anyways, I know my save isn't corrupt or anything because it works perfectly fine when I load autosaves or hardsaves, It only crashes when I try to load quicksaves. If it helps I'm using 44 Steam workshop mods and 3 Nexus mods.

Thanks a bunch!

P.S.: On what I think is an unrelated note, when Skyrim is legitimately syncing after a session, it has been taking an unusually long time and will only go up in short percentages at a time with a 0Kb/s download speed, any thoughts on this too?

Hey! I see you are new so I'll just ask the quick basics.

Firstly, it's a good tip to turn off ALL auto save features. Furthermore, quicksave and quickload are rubbish. They simply just seem to cause more problems than the convenience is worth. Hardsaves are much more stable and I would say going forward, that is what you should do. I don't think I've ever read contradicting statements or opinions on that matter.

But lets try to fix things for you! :)

1.) Are you using the SSME patch? http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50305/? (Alternatively you can google how to use it with SKSE, but I prefer the first method). If you aren't, this may be your godsend, cause it certainly has been and will be for many to come. It's really simple, just download and extract it to your MAIN skyrim directory. You can read the technical stuff on the page, it will most likely fix your problem I am guessing.

2.) Are you using ENB? If not you should be at least using the default enb, for all the performance enhancements is brings. Without them, you could be getting some CTD based on various factors overloading your system. http://www.enbdev.com/mod_tesskyrim_v0254.html (If you need help installing it, let us know)

3.) Any Skyrim.ini or SkyrimPrefs.ini tweaks done? I'm going to guess no but just thought I'd ask.

4.) Have you used LOOT at all? f not I would suggest getting it and using it. If you've been playing for awhile without problems though, then I would NOT recommend using this on your existing save game. If your problem isn't fixed from #1, then this will help you in the future and will prevent any errors.

5.) As for your long sync issues with Steam. I believe you probably need to defrag your computer. Skyrim and lots of mods take up large chunks of your computer and between adding and removing them really bogs down on the SATA drives. You can find a decent free one from googling, though if you can, a paid one really is a lot better.

Steam Workshop has some great mods that are only available there, but it's hard to manage them as you have to use the Steam launcher which is not what people usually use for modding/mods.

Try number one though and see if it helps. I know I sound like I'm repeating myself, but seriously, I think it's going to fix your problem. #2 really will help as well.

Thanks Dennis!

Looks like the SSME patch really did the trick, everything's loading up just fine now! Also turned off autosaving and removed all of my quicksave and autosave files, and I actually noticed that the game runs a bit smoother because of it! Thanks for the advice on that! Finally, I threw in the ENB patch so hopefully ill see some benefit from that as well!

My problem's pretty much been solved but to answer your question, yes I have tweaked with the Skyrim.ini file. I set the uGrid value to 7 grids instead of the default 5 but that was a while ago before I started having save problems and I just did it for the quality of my distant rendering.

Thanks also for the tip on the syncing question! I'm an IT guy so definitely the first thing I tried for that was looking into potential local issues (I defrag and do manual registry cleanups regularly) but it looks like I'm still having some issues with that. My ISP's been a little sluggish lately though, so that my be the cause, hopefully it will work itself out!

Thank you so much for the help!

Hey I'm really glad it worked out for you!!! That SSME is a god send for real lol. The ENB settings can be tweaked to your appropriate settings.

I would probably make a separate post, asking about enblocal settings. It's different for everyone and others may give better advice than I could xD

And okay that's cool, some just make a lot of changes and default ini's end up being there fix, but with SSME it's not a huge issue anymore.

Yeah the ISP throttling you is probably what it is. I know my speeds are all over the place at times.

You are very welcome ^__^ have fun!

  • 3 years later...

Dennis, you sir are a freakin' legend! that SSME patch fixed a similar problem I had.

My problem was none of my *game saves* would load so was relying solely on quick n' auto saves...

Then... even *they* would end up in an endless load screen. Patch fixed it all.

Cheers mate!

Glad to hear I could help!

I will say though, that post I made was from 3+ years ago.

I have long gave up using SSME in favor of 'Crash Fixes' & 'Load Game CTD Fix' which has really fixed any problems I have had.

They are both SKSE plugins, one of which, crash fixes, requires some editing of an INI file but otherwise they are superior additions to your load order/playthrough.
