Easy Tutorials For the CK (It ain't that complicated :)

Ok so by popular demand, and subsequently followed by incessant nagging, topped off with the fabled whip begging, I finally made some easy tutorial videos. I try to be pretty clear though I am ADD as all hell sometimes, but there are a few people out there to put it mildly that I have walked through the CK with who are doing great with this kind of help and I started where most of you are starting now, which is no knowledge and just the desire to make something.

After using the CK for a few hours that desire turns into a all encompassing need to decapitate yourself and then send your head off to the german soccer team to practice with. Some of this is indeed due to the myriad of crazy, and useless tutorials out there and also to the very very useful ones that yabber on for 5 hours to make a simple companion or 476 pages.

I took 20 min, and hopefully showed how you can get even more super customize-able with it as well and you can keep watching the others to get ideas of how to play around with it

Now lets be clear, if you are new to Skyrim modding and want to make a quest and cant sit through the grand total of 2 hours 20 min in these three videos, modding is probably not for you. It can be frustrating to the extreme and make you want to throw a hammer through your monitor. In my quest tutorial I even fubared it a few times with simple mistakes which is why it took 1 hour 26 min as opposed to 55 min.

So here ya go, going to reserve a few posts in case I do more videos

Custom voiced follower in under 20 minutes, off the default skyrim framework and fully customizeable in all aspects to suit your needs

Scripting basics where we make a trigger box fire multiple fireballs at the player from different locations, then create a falling exploding chicken spell (Lost the first video on this one had to redo but everything was already done so I try to cover it all best I can)

Basic quest tutorial, where we have a cursed man whose wife is a goat because the woman he was having a affair with is a witch, so you get her booze ingredients so she turns them both into goats.. I did say simple right? Maybe I should have done DAGRONBORN GO GET ME SWORDZ winning

---

Getting Companions to Ride when you do, using a summon spell for their custom horse

NOTE, if you want them to just have a horse that isn't a summon create the horse in game and dbl click it and go to the Ownership tab, and make the actor the horse owner so he will ride it

I'm sure your vids are wonderful but here's a couple of points to consider.

(a) incredible as it must sound, some of us in far flung corners of the globe are not on broadband so two an a half hours of video would take three an a half ours of watching the 'buffering' wheel go round.

(b) in the absence of broadband watching 2.5 hours of video would cost me, here 20 to 25 euros (about $30) - which given you don't know IF your going to get the info your seeking until you've watched it is buying pigs in pokes.

© I can read faster than you can speak - I promise. I can read a hell of a lot faster than the people who make... er... videos... umm... where they're... err... trying to... ermm... perform a visual task while verbally relating what it is they're doing - As opposed to recording the narration later. Which I'm sure you are not guilty of but you have to admit it's as common as it is irritating.

Holy crap... you pay 30$ for 2.5 hours of watching hd videos?

..... Forget the tutorials which honestly I have no idea and I tend to be pretty eloquent I think... but comon... wow.. i pay like 160$ a month with unlimited 100/15 and I do mean unlimited I could stream youtube vids 24/7

... You just made me feel good about having time warner cable.. that is a hard hard thing to do.

And honestly though ppl with those problems shouldn't watch my vids and they wont (I hope) I don't think I'm worth 30$ for that basic crap rofl. SO meh your point aint that valid and neither is this one situations are variable.

And I can read faster than anyone in the world can speak, it doesn't mean that they write better than what I am showing as I speak, usually they write all gobbleygook and tend to give 10 times the information as needed which just garbles what beginners are looking for

And I did record as I was going lol

But these tutorials are for newer people who are just breaking in, a lot of the CK is sooo scawy and big and all that crap I see here or I see people who ask some basic questions which should have been answered in page 7 paragraph 4 subsection c of the tutorial on getting bendu to do one simple thing.

So all in all basically they will help some people and if anyone asks a question that may be more in depth or it seems they are out of their depth now I can point to a vid that I know will help them. If their bandwidth can't support it that is out of my control :P

NOTE: 637 wpm seems to be world record, I can read at 2200 wpm, giggidy, sometimes visual is better! Hence why i look at my pron instead of reading romance novels!

I live in australia, internet is not the best in the world, pretty sure it's on the lower tier of internets. That said though, I have no issues watching videos or playing games or downloading content. I can't stream videos live because of my low upload, but everything else about my connection is functional and fast enough.

I would not worry about "slow" connections because I'm sure they can just find tutorials elsewhere that is more convenient for them (creationkit website's tutorials). Obviously for people who can't watch videos then they will just have to find an alternative, you can still keep up your good work with your videos.

Hehe, the funny thing is one of the guys I have been helping that was also pushing me to do these vids messaged me on skype and was incredulous that I posted something to help people and the first post is a negative about it. I figure it's the internet, people be people

I would like to get feedback on them though from anybody, I do tend to ramble on about things and I was a GM in wow for a long period so I know people start to gloss over crap the longer the monologue goes on, but idk I tried to keep it as informative and interesting as I could without being droll

I might actually start streaming some of the quests I make in discworld, I do have a twitch account but rarely use it etc. Making the quests is pretty much the fastest part, hell I just spent 2 days learning to animate nifs and textures in nifs then retexting some armor I got perms for and outfitting it all bleh, for one bloody character 2 days. lol And don't get me started on dungeon designing :P

Really not wishing to be adversarial here, you've taken it upon yourself to try to help folk and I appreciate the thought. But I think the (overlooked) issue of information on the CK comes down to 'eras'. I'm trying to learn the GECK here (because FNV is easier on my machine and I know the game like my back yard). I was amazed at how much 'assumed-knowledge' was included in the GECK's tutorials and looking for info I've ended up all the way back to Morrowind written tutorials to find things like how the Regions Editor Radius-Density-Cluster equation works (talk about Basic knowledge?). Because sometime around Fo3 the video-era kicks in and everyone said to themselves 'working out how to write this down is so much harder than umming and ahhing into a f**king microphone' (Pardon me  it does annoy me). What this amounts to is there is almost nothing substantial, written down from Fo3 onward... because it's too hard?.... Pffff!

And of course you are correct about the bandwidth/cost thing being pretty marginal. And my complaint reflects a personal concern about the quiet 'First world or f**k-off' thing that is implicit in how the internet, Steam and games like Skyrim are managed these days (so much for the brave new cyber-world, eh). Which is obvious when you find yourself on the outside but quite easy to overlook if downloading 9gb of updates is merely an inconvenience - as opposed to a major operation. All of which is, as you say, beyond your control (and veering off topic at a rate of knots).

So, trying to be less negative, as you appear to be extremely knowledgeable and willing to help. Would you not consider getting some of the stuff you know down in words? Think how long your help could last, the Morrowind tuts are still available when Youtube Vids from last year have vanished without a trace... Because on some level, no matter where you are, bandwidth still costs and a cost of a page of text is negligible to maintain on the net.

But thank you very much for your efforts all the same and good luck.

Honestly there are tons and tons and tons of write-ups for Skyrim. I just have some easier ways of understanding things.

I made my first mod "descent" without ever having touched programming or the CK and I did it in under a month and a half. I do concede I am a bit smarter than the average person but the information is clearly there. I didn't receive personal help from anyone, it was all write-ups and the wiki etc

There is actually WAY more information written down and yes I dislike some of it due to the sheer amount of useless information in them.

So ya, where I do help when I can and post up crap etc, doing a full writeup with pictures etc would take by far longer than me just doing the quest video, plus I am actually working on my mod in those for the most part :P

Kind of on par with a conversation I recently had about my intro credits, I will help people when it doesn't inconvenience me but I will not go super far out of my way to help when I have a lot of more important (to me) things I need to get done

:P

Nothing really negative but if I can help easily IE videos where I am doing stuff inside my own mod, then why not, just a little annoyance getting the screen grab etc setup.
