All magic staggers the player, broken ward effect.

Highwayman300

Recommended Posts

I have a terrible issue where all magic casted at the player will stagger it depending on magnitude, like the player had a constant ward effect active at all times. This makes the game almost unplayable, as all spell casters will stun lock the player until they run out of magicka.

It appears to be a lingering effect from some mod, but i can not tell which one it is. I have tried the command: Disableallspells but didn't seemed to have worked.

I tried a scrip cleaner on the current save but it appears some mod is constantly applying the effect. So far i have been unable to find a fix, as it appears no one else has had this issue before but a very few amount of people who weren't able to solve it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. Seems that we have common mods:

  • Skyrim+DG+DB+HF
  • Update (*)
  • Realistic Ragdoll Force.
  • Expanded Jewelry Crafting.
  • SkyUI (*)
  • Cloaks. (*)
  • UFO. (*)
  • Apocalypse - Spell Package. (*)
  • Alternate start - Live another life.

I marked with (*) mods that I've used on a past character, without that issue. Try to begin investigating those that are not marked.

I don't know if you have any mod or you used console to modify any Actor Value. Maybe is related to it, cause I started to notice that way, and NPCs don't seem affected by that (at least my situation).

I hope this helps

I would double-check your Apocalypse MCM, as some of the spells could be causing this issue. Especially if you scaled up the spells. Otherwise, I'd double check your Ultimate Combat mod, as I read this on the mod page:

-Special Attacks
NPC will have special attacks different from normal attack and power attack.
Special attack more deal damage; and deal stagger even if blocking.
NPC cannot special attack when not have stamina.
Human npc animations are created by kill move ones, Other NPC add new some attack animations.

- NPC power attacks staggering.
Player is overwhelming advantage. Because player not limited in behavior, when player get stagger by power attack.
So player gets the stagger of limited action same as NPC.
If player cannot control time too long, it would not be fun time. Player's stagger time is shorter than NPC.

So I'd check the settings under this part of the MCM, as read on the mod page:

+Stagger
NPC resists stagger - NPC has stagger resist. Whenever stagger attack(it means bash and power attack) hits enemy, NPC have stagger time decreases gradually.
NPC power attack stagger - NPC power attacks staggering with limited control.
NPC bow stagger - NPC bow attack has stagger.
Player bow stagger - Player bow attack has stagger.

Hope this helps.

Necroing this year-and-a-half old thread bc I have the exact same problem and it's ruined a save I really liked. But I have more information:

I couldn't figure out which mod, if any, was causing this, but I did load some backsaves and pinpointed the moment the bug started appearing: after entering Labyrinthian Thoroughfare during the Staff of Magnus quest. Deactivating all mods didn't help, so I tried using a save editor to compare the two saves right before and after the bug to find the differences, and found 4 scripts in the bugged save that didn't exist in the good save, all something to do with wisps! Thought maybe the Labyrinthian wispmother fight gave me a bad script that was supposed to go away but persisted, but deleting those scripts didn't fix the bug! So I guess that was a false lead.

As you can see, not a lot of overlap between my mod list and Highwayman300's, and not a lot of obvious likely suspects. Also, I didn't change my mods at all during the period where the bug appeared; the bug may be caused by a mod, but it's definitely situational, which is probably why it's so rare and difficult to diagnose.

Anyway I'm bumping this thread with the extra data in hopes that someone will be able to help me out.

Update: I was totally wrong about where this bug occurred! I traced it back in my save files to the real culprit: a random dragon attack on the College of Winterhold! I had a save from right before the attack, and when I loaded it and used the console "disable" command on the dragon, I was able to play forward from that point bug-free.

But dozens of play-hours later, I encountered another random dragon attack, this time on the Windhelm Stables/Docks/nearby farms/etc. I defeated the dragon and continued on to complete like three different quests before I realized that the bug had appeared again when some vampire spellcaster started knocking me on my ass with a stunlock. Reloaded to the dragon battle, and sure enough, that's the source of the bug. Only this time, disabling the dragon did NOT fix the problem! Something about the dragon loading in the same space as my character created the problem.

As an additional observation, the magic-stun bug applies equally to all actors, not just the player, and it acts identically to the Impact perk except that you don't need to dual-cast to trigger it; any Destruction magic will stun anyone, including dragon breath.

When I disabled the second dragon, I noticed it had an "FF" prefix, indicating it was added by a mod. Will look into identifying the mod and seeing if that's the culprit.

That's all for now, will post updates when I have them.

Disabled all mods and the dragon persists, so I guess I'm wrong about it being added by a mod. Tried cleaning the scripts with a save editor but I couldn't find anything that was causing it! Totally baffled at this point, and pretty sad that I keep having to disable random dragon attacks when they're one of the most fun parts of the game.

If anyone more experienced with scripts/save editing has any thoughts, I'm desperate to hear them.

Wrong again!!! It wasn't the dragon. I was sure that I tested the save before that (in the Aetherium Forge, fwiw) and found it clean, but on a later reload that one was bugged too. The save from before entering the Forge was clean though, and playing through the Forge a second time didn't result in the bug. If the bug appeared again I was about to declare it related to breath weapons (dragons obviously, but the Forgemaster has one too) but it didn't so who frickin knows.

Anyway I'm out of insight. If you're googling this problem and turn up this thread like I did, please comment and share what's going on for you. We need more data before we can narrow down the cause.

I'm pretty sure I got this issue from using a mod from the steam workshop called "standing stones overhaul by anonimous". The lady stone provides a 10 points magicka shield (something beneath those lines) passively. Then I deleted the mod while having this blessing. Then I got this spell stunlock cancer on my character...

After hours of searching and trying to solve this bug, I understood that this crap was here since the beginning ( you can actually find reports of this issue from 2012!!! ) and that there was NOONE who cured it ( there is one guy on steamcommunity who seems to have it solved by some mod, but that doesnt work for me + another guy said that it didnt work for him either). So the only salvation from this bug is in fact ONLY a start of the new game.

P.S. This bug seems to always have a different set of events that lead to it, so its pretty much impossible to have a cure for it just posted somewhere. If this can be fixed, the fix is always different.

P.P.S. Sorry if my english is bad, it is not my native language.

I know this is super late but I found a solution to this in my own save file. Somehow your player ward value is getting set to above 0 even when you don't have a ward. download this mod called status and look at your wardpower stat STATUS at Skyrim Nexus - Mods and Community (nexusmods.com). After that use player.modav wardpower -X. Where X is the value for your current ward power. IF the number is super low like mine was .00013 I had to decrease it by .0002 because of rounding. Hope this helps
