It would cool if this mod was included http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/48146/?tab=2&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Fnewvegas%2Fajax%2Fmodfiles%2F%3Fid%3D48146&pUp=1 and the survivors on the Moon base would send out a distress call asking for someone to rescue them.

OOoooo Yeah that would make an awesome quest mod.

OOoooo Yeah that would make an awesome quest mod.

We could also come up with an interesting idea on "how" the disaster took place.

Of course we would need to ask the creator of that mod for permission to use the mod first. So i'll try and make contact in case someone decides to make this mod. I'll let everyone know how it goes. The moon base should make a nice player home after the moon base and it's colonists are saved.

Awesome! And yeah Blaze!

The Moon is a harsh mistress - here's a few more considerations on life there:

  • The Moons rotation period is synchronous with its orbital period, which means that the same side is always pointing towards Earth. It also means that a day on the moon is the equivalent of approximately 28 Earth days, 14 days of night and 14 days of sunshine. This results in an average temperature of 100 deg. celsius on the day side and -150 deg. celsius on the night side.
  • The Moon has no atmosphere and no magnetic field, so there's no protection from the cosmic rays and solar flares that we're naturally protected from on Earth. This is actually a real tricky problem for real life space exploration. We can manage a supply of oxygen and we can deal with extreme temperatures, but radiation is a real show-stopper. Therefore this problem should be adressed in some form.
  • Another effect of the lack of a gravity an atmosphere (oops, messed up there,) is that tons of small meteorites constantly rain down on the surface. On the Earth, our atmosphere will quickly burn up any meteorites smaller than several meters, they manifest themselves as shooting stars. That doesn't happen on the Moon and it could spell disaster if a base was hit by even a small meteorite. Subterranean dwelling would probably be preferred for this reason.
  • The gravity on the Moon is about 16 % of the Earth's. Because weight depends on gravity, things would only weigh around 16 % of their weight here on Earth. Morgwynn touched on the adverse effects of low gravity on the human body and he is completely right. A base would have to have some sort of artificial gravity to simulate Earth-like conditions for prolonged settlement to be a possibility. If we were talking about space stations, artificial gravity could be achieved with rotation, but this obviously can't be done with a surface base. I'm sure there's lots of science fictiony ideas out there though. As long as this problem is also, at the very least, adressed in some form.
  • Another detail that came to mind. I was thinking about firearms and how they would require oxygen to fire. Turns out that isn't the case, modern ammunition contains oxidizer that would let you fire, even in a vacuum. That doesn't mean you can fire guns as you please though, the effect of gun overheating would be far worse in a vacuum, because there's nothing to conduct the heat away from gun. Well, other than your hand of course. There's also the issue of recoil being magnified by the reduced (or lack of) gravity. Seeing this taken into consideration would also be very cool.

Location, location, location:

  • The polar regions could be viable locations for a base, since there would be locations of permanent sunlight. The temperature here would be far more hospitable, but still cold, somewhere around -50 deg. celsius on average. Also, because of the continuous sunlight there's energy in the form of solar power. Theroetically, there's also water ice to be found in these locations.
  • The equatorial regions are likely to have larger amounts of Helium-3, due to their direct exposure to the solar wind. Helium-3 is much sought after because of it's potential use in nuclear fusion. Nuclear fusion is not the same as nuclear fission, which is what is used by power plants today. Fusion leaves less dangerous byproducts and produces several times the energy output of fission.
  • The equator would also be the best place to put a spaceport for extra-lunar transportation, since the rotation speed of the Moon will help launch the spaceship into orbit. The Moon rotates slowly, so it's a slight advantage, but it's better than nothing.
  • This was also touched on by Morgwynn. There's lava tubes below the surface that could provide yet another possible habitat for humans. They would protect from the harsh temperatures and radation on the surface, with the average temperature being around -25 deg. celsius. They would also protect from the meteorites that are constantly raining down on the moon surface.
  • The Moon surface is littered with meteor impact craters. One of these could also potentially be built into a base and the impacts have probably exposed large amounts of minerals that could be mined from these locations.
  • Because one side is always facing Earth, there would be no direct communication with the Earth on the far side without the use of satellites. I imagine that side would also be more heavily bombarded with meteorites.
  • Also, why restrict it to a single location? There could be two, or even three bases, each in a different location for different purposes. Helium-3 mining and spaceport around the equator, some crater mining operations, and some locations that are suitable for habitation. Just throwing out ideas.

If this gets made, it would be incredibly cool if some of the science was actually done right and reasons was provided for such things as the location of the base, instead of choosing a spot at random. It shouldn't be on the level of hard science fiction accuracy, but just enough that it feels like it could actually be done in real life. I know a few tidbits about astronomy because I absolutely love reading about that stuff and let me tell you, there's tons of sites with theoretical information on space colonization out there. Even Wikipedia has an article on Moon colonization, from which I compiled some of the information in this post.

The moon also has 4 types Moonquakes " There are at least four different kinds of moonquakes: (1) deep moonquakes about 700 km below the surface, probably caused by tides; (2) vibrations from the impact of meteorites; (3) thermal quakes caused by the expansion of the frigid crust when first illuminated by the morning sun after two weeks of deep-freeze lunar night; and (4) shallow moonquakes only 20 or 30 kilometers below the surface.

The first three were generally mild and harmless. Shallow moonquakes on the other hand were doozies. Between 1972 and 1977, the Apollo seismic network saw twenty-eight of them; a few "registered up to 5.5 on the Richter scale," says Neal. A magnitude 5 quake on Earth is energetic enough to move heavy furniture and crack plaster. " ~ N.A.S.A. Quote. So any adventure would probably have a few Moonquakes to spice up the whole Moon Base experience.

Also the Moon does have a trace atmosphere caused by planetary outgassing however it is so thin that it is almost not worth mentioning but since this is a science fictional mod who knows maybe the lunar colonists found a way increase the atmosphere somehow.

There is always the Gyrojet series of weapons that fire rocket ammunition that would function best in a lunar environment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyrojet
