mudbox parts of model disappear after creating a paint layer

Ive made a crossbow mesh in 3ds max and exported it as an obj to import to mudbox. It seemed just fine after import. here it is:

However after adding a paint layer this happens:

Ive found online that it can be a problem with UVs. Heres my UV map:

I use 3ds max 2012 and mudbox 2013. Could it be an export/import problem?
