Weapon renaming tool?

I have searched the NV nexus for a mod that allows you to rename any weapon at will, and I have not found such a mod.

Something like this would allow one to grow more attached to their favorite weapon, making it a partner instead of just another killing tool.

I apologize if something like this already exists, I just couldn't find it. But if someone knows of something like this, please direct me to it.

There is such a tool, it's called the GECK  and it lets you name everything, anything you wish, which sort of makes your mod idea redundant, no? Granted you can't change the name while the game is running but you can change everything else.

Well i'm not good at file stuff. In fact it's a miracle that I got mods to work in the first place.

I'm talking about an actual mod that lets you point at something and rename it, then only that one individual item would have the unique name.

Do you want to name a weapon a mod has introduced, one from a DLC or a vanilla weapon? With the vanilla and DLC items creating a new ID (then individual name) is really very easy, and mod ones only sometimes have wrinkles that can make it slightly trickier.

There is a console command [setname] but I've never used it and vaguely remember reading it didn't work, might be worth a try though.

[Edit] Yea 'SetName' works, just renamed the 9mm Pistol to 1911 and a Mod helmet to 'Iffy' (it's textures are flaky) so there you go no mod needed.

Just drop the thing where your character can see it then hit the tilde key.

Click on the thing you wish to rename and you will see it's ref ID appear at the top of the screen.

Then type SetName then a space and type the word or name you wish to call the item.

Press enter and tilde again to close the console and it's done.

SetName will rename the base form, so you renamed all 9mm Pistols to 1911s. It also doesn't persist in the save file, so it'll have to be used every time you launch the game, which is a hassle and prevents you from getting achievements. It should also be pointed out that it is an NVSE function.

So you really do need a mod for this.

Renaming any single weapon is not possible in any way though, unless you create an entirely new base form as a copy of the item you want to rename. This can be done through script by using TempCloneForm (also from NVSE) after which you can use SetName on the new base form. This has the unfortunate side effect of the item not working as the original in some cases. For example, if you renamed a weapon, the weapon wouldn't be affected by any of the perks that affected the original, would lose its status as a holdout weapon, and probably other things as well. This is because the new base form wouldn't be present in the appropriate form lists that these perks require to work. Also, as the name suggests, the cloned item is only temporary and doesn't persist in the save file, so you would have to keep track of cloned items and recreate them when a game is loaded. Quite messy.

The only practical way to make this would be to make it affect all instances of an item.

Ha, I was way out in the middle of a bare hightmap when I tried it and didn't have two of anything on my character to check. But the Gamebro Console command I read about (in relation to Fo3 or possibly Oblivion) doesn't work after all, but was recycled by those clever buggers at NVSE.

Anyway our friend's best option remains creating a new base form in the GECK then place it in the world or use additem... Then in no time at all he'll be putting 'holdout weapon' status on the A-M Rifle and making pistols that fire nuclear teddy bears  which is all pretty much just ticking boxes in the GECK, no?

I'd just end up messing things up if I even attempted using it.

This mod exists - http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/48348/? what's so difficult about turning that into a weapon renaming item?

As mentioned, the SetName function changes the name of the base object. That means every instance of that object in the world will get the new name.

Each NPC is its own base object and typically there is only one placed instance of an NPC in the world, so this is not a problem for an NPC renamer tool.

But if you use SetName on a weapon, say, changing a 9mm Pistol into a 1911 like SayinNuthin did, then every 9mm Pistol you come across will be called 1911.

Well that makes sense.

I guess i'm S.O.L. until someone makes a mod then.
