Making a custom follower (from mod) playable?

Is there a way to make an NPC added by a mod (custom race, facegen data, etc.) playable?

I'm tired of playing as a 50-something warrior, and child races are way too young... I'd like to play as a young adventurer, and this one is the best I could find for a male character: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/59053/

However I can't seem to make it playable: I've tried using the racemenu mimic plugin, and have also tried to edit it in the CK but to no avail. Basically this is what I did:

1. open the .esp in the CK (meshes and textures are where they should be)
2. go to Object Window > actors > actor > actor > aaaYoungHuman
3. tick "is chargen face preset"
4. go to Object Window > character > race > aaaygHuman, then "Preset NPCs"
5. click & drag "aaaYoungHuman" (from #2) to this list

...and all I have now is an ugly purple head :pinch:

Any idea?

You can just use Better Males to make your male character look young.

Doesn't really change things that much. Same square 40-something heads.

If anyone can answer the question in my first post, I'd appreciate it.
