Orsimer Equipment: Why so Crude?

Moldy

Recommended Posts

Something's been bothering me,lately. Quite hugely,I might add. Orsimer gear. It's made by the most celebrated and talented smiths on the continent, but,in Skyrim,it looks like it was hammered into shape cold. It looks sloppy. Childish, even. The Orsimer are strong, proud people, who relish in applying their craft, whatever it may be. They are also far more familiar with war than most other races of Nirn, thanks to Orsinium's numerous razings, among other things,so they know what works and what doesn't.

In short, why does their gear look like it was designed and forged by an overimaginative Dunmer child? It makes absolutely zero sense. Orsimer weapons are liable to break in your hands as they're designed in Vanilla Skyrim, and you're equally liable to skewer yourself on all of those pointy bits. In Morrowind, their gear was practical looking while also intimidating; You resembled some humanoid beast in that armour, and their weapons were pure function. In Oblivion, the armour is simply practical, while the weapons are nonexistent.

So,I humbly ask the 3D artists of the Nexus; Can you find it in your hearts to give Orsimer gear appearances appropriate for the finest smiths of Tamriel? Functional, yet brutal looking? I'm sure it can be done. Although,I'd appreciate it if the helm remained open... And without horns. Seriously; Every single horned helmet in Skyrim looks like total garbage...

I initially passed over the first mod because I thought it added their Orsimer weapons alongside the existing ones. Yolk's on me,I was wrong. The weapons look practical and intimidating,so checkies in the box. What it doesn't have, however,is an Orsimer feel,at least to me. If I don't find something else,I'll use it,though.

However, the second mod is simply a straight-up port of Oblivion's Orsimer armour, and the weapons look even cruder,if that's even possible. Hell, the short-bladed weapon (Dagger? Sword?) looks like it's missing its edge. If I wanted Oblivion's Orsimer armour,I'd be playing Oblivion. Though, thank you for the effort.

My logic on the crude look: The Orsimer are known for being, basically, a corrupted race of elves from when their god ancestor was eaten and corrupted into the "Daedric Prince" Malacath we know of today (Daedric Prince here is in quotations because he isn't, as I understand it, regarded as a prince by the other princes, but whatever.) Their god was corrupted, and so to were they. It makes sense that also their works would be likewise corrupted, made harsh looking. They don't care for looking good. They care for strength, and toughness. Therefore, physical appearance is low priority, if not outright ignored, where crafting weapons is concerned. That being said, I see a mild resemblance in their armor style to that of the Samurai of early japan. Leastways, it seems slightly Japanese to me. The weapons, not so much. The edge of their sword looks like it's already been hacking at some heavily armored trolls before being put in the shop. I'm not expecting good looking weapons from them, but I can see what you mean by practical. The armor is good, the weapons need work.

I only have one problem with the first mod, in that even in Skyrim Standards, the weapons are too thick. But they are 100x better than vanilla :)

There's something off about the second mod. It might be the fact that it was inspired by Warcraft Orcs and not Orsimer and the fact that it just looks too much like Blades armour.

Sorry, wrong wording. I meant that I didn't like that they took inspiration from Warcraft Orcs. The banner is straight off the Blackrock Clan of Warcraft http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090124183425/wowwiki/images/thumb/c/c5/Blackrock_banner_in_wc3.jpg/180px-Blackrock_banner_in_wc3.webp

I just wish it looked heavier like in Morrowind http://images.uesp.net/9/9d/MW-item-Orcish_Armor_Male.jpg
