VulcanTourist
78I've been having a problem with mismatched head and body textures on pretty much all NPCs. The head texture is typically much darker than the body texture, though as you will see I've observed it the other way round, so the pattern is not so obvious. It does not affect the player character: I even went to the point of installing and trying Alternate Actors to swap bodies, and when I did so with an affected NPC the mismatch disappeared from that (former) NPC and then appeared on my (former) player character. I'm using a CBBE body with XPMSE 2.50 skeleton, including functional HDT. I had one obvious body textures mod, Real Girls Realistic Body Texture for CBBE; the mismatch has persisted after removing it. The attached screenshots should document what I'm seeing well enough. As some of those show, I'm also having problem with all Briarheart NPCs appearing with a completely invisible body, only hands and feet (and head?) and equipped items being visible; I'm not sure if that is at all related, but I suspect it's a separate issue entirely. Is there a common suspect in a case like this? If not, I'll be back to tack on as much detail as needed to provide clues that might help you help me figure it out. The game plays just fine, but it's just a wee bit annoying. (Forgive the weird random number in my post. It's not me doing it and only appears in NexusMods posts for some bizarre reason. Thank you, NSA!) Yes its all the body mods you've installed. Something has gotten messed up somewhere. The only solution at this point is bulldoze everything level the site and rebuild from the ground up. Uninstall all the body related mods and empty the folders .../meshes/actors/character/ and delete any body .nif's still lurking there and any corresponding .dds textures from the .../textures/actors/character/ folders. And reinstall.
VulcanTourist
91Did you happen to look at the screenshots and notice that it affects male as well as female NPCs? Isn't that a clue? Where does the texture for the male head reside? All I have in the male directory is this: \Data\Textures\actors\character\male\malebody_1.dds\Data\Textures\actors\character\male\malebody_1_msn.dds\Data\Textures\actors\character\male\malebody_1_s.dds\Data\Textures\actors\character\male\malehands_1.dds\Data\Textures\actors\character\male\malehands_1_msn.dds\Data\Textures\actors\character\male\malehands_1_s.dds\Data\Textures\actors\character\male\maleunderwear.dds\Data\Textures\actors\character\male\maleunderwear_n.dds 16 Edited March 17, 2015 by VulcanTourist
VulcanTourist
Let me completely rephrase my question: what files or file types make up how a face appears in game? More specifically, what files can affect the color or hue of the face? Is there a file that can affect color/hue that isn't a texture file? I ask it that way because I experimented: Earlier I had been using Real Girls Realistic Body Texture for CBBE. I removed that per above as part of my troubleshooting effort. Removing it didn't help, as the color difference between faces and bodies persists (with a rare exception that I can't explain). With females the face is always darker, usually much darker, and with males it's the opposite: light face and dark body. It only affects vanilla NPCs, not the player character nor any custom NPCs. Then today I experimented further by installing Mature Skin Texture And Body instead, hoping that it would override whatever is doing this. The installation did overwrite one female NIF and one female DDS file, but the problem still didn't go away, even just for females, and since that mod ONLY affects female NPCs it can't fix this cross-gender problem. It's something that affects BOTH male and female NPCs, BUT affects them differently. So... I need to better understand the purposes and relationships of all the different files involved, what parts they play in the process. I think if I understand that, I can pinpoint the problem myself. I'll be damned if I'm going to take @soupdragon1234's advice and throw all the babies out with the bath water when I KNOW there is a surgical solution. I assume there's a top-notch tutorial that explains them, but I haven't yet come across it in the last few months of almost daily visits to this site and others.18 Edited March 20, 2015 by VulcanTourist
