What is the max my system can take?

It seems like I can either install a few environmental mods and little/nothing else, or tons of gameplay-changing mods and no environmental mods. Otherwise, I get too much lag to make play tolerable. Does that sound right, given that my system is a Phenom II X6, 16 GB RAM, GTX 460, Win7?

And, my guess is your motherboard will not take a newer CPU. You will probably also want to upgrade your power supply as that new Video card will need a lot more power. Then, will your RAM work in the new motherboard? And what about your case? will the new video board fit? New boards are both longer and wider, and need a direct connection from the power supply. Often upgrading one component requires upgrading something else to be able to take advantage of any improvement from the new part.

My PSU is definitely OK. I have a Seasonic 800W. I'm pretty sure my mobo (ASUS M4A89GTD PRO) and CPU are OK. CPU is already overclocked, and I have room to spare to crank it a little more. But now I'm curious. What would I upgrade a Phenom II X6 black edition to?

When I built this system, I basically scrimped on the GPU at the time.

Oh, and the case is HUGE. I think there's an Oompa-Loompa living in there...

I got an EVGA GTX 960 and it runs Skyrim very well. I went nuts and loaded up all my favorite mods, gameplay, immersion, environment, the works. There's no lag worth complaining about. There's an occasional jitter, but none of the screeching halt lag I would get on the GTX 460 with tons of mods. And this is all with the ultra settings set from the launcher.
