A possible solution to paid mods, or just more DLC?

Yes, I'm quite new to the Nexus forums, but not new to gaming at all. Over the past week, I've had a good amount of time to think about the chaos that occurred over the weekend, and I figured something out.

 

Paid mods are a bit difficult to implement onto PC games, especially old ones.... and by 'difficult', I mean 'impossible'.

 

This is where a thought occurred to me; Why try to push something like this onto the PC? Something that already has mods ingrained into its culture? If you're thinking about making any money off of mods, supporting mod developers, and making a game better, what better place to do it than on Consoles?

 

Yep, consoles. Xbox 360, PlayStation, whatever. I owned Skyrim on the console a long time ago, and as fun as it is, it became unbearably boring far too fast. I ended up giving the entire console, with the game on it, to a friend. (Long story.)

 

Naturally, the problems that mods come with wouldn't just go away. They would still have to run the mod through some testing, make sure it won't break any games, as they often do. Mod-to-mod compatibility might be an issue as well, but if the game publisher puts forth ANY effort into helping the mods, then those have a possibility of going away.

 

There's still the crappy shadyness to it all, yes, but given enough effort and attention, there's the slim chance of it actually working.

 

It's all just a thought, really, and I wanted to put it out there to see if it was any good, i suppose.

Console games generally push the systems to their limits which means a lot of mods would push them too far, the type of modding we enjoy on the PC simply can't work on consoles.

Armor and clothing mods could work on consoles. I really believe that's going to happen. It wont be modding like it is now where we can just upload anything we want. More likely we would submit our mods for consideration and if they meet certain standards and conditions set by the devs then we can sell them. Of course Beth will get the lion's share of the profit.

I am not against modders making money. I am against using a pay-per-mod system. I presently use hundreds of mods in dozens of games. Some mods are clearly outstanding, most are useful, a few are duds. How do I make a very limited budget stretch to cover buying mods?

A website like the Nexus could require a yearly or monthly surcharge per user to be shared by modders on the basis of annual downloads. However, I suspect that users would go elsewhere. I do not know the ratio of premium users to non-paying on the nexus, but I guess it to be fairly low. People talk a good game, but disappear when money is involved.

 

The same problem of payment applies to media online. Newspapers and magazines have tried to establish paywalls, with limited success. I personally read from about 20 online magazines and newsites every week. I could never hope to afford a subscription to all of them.

 

I do ALWAYS pay for games, though.
