MidbossVyers
When you interrogate Wuunferth about necromancy during Blood on the Ice, he will sound very offended saying that he is a member of the College of Winterhold, in good standing, and that the College has not allowed necromancy for hundreds of years: http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Wuunferth_the_Unliving However, if you talk to Phinis Gestor, he says that the College never enforced the Imperial Mages Guild's official ban on necromancy. Was Wuunferth just BSing, in order to placate the muggles? Edited May 15, 2015 by MidbossVyers
Noortje
I think there's several objects in his study that do indicate he was bsing about not using necromancy. I still think to this day that he put some kind of mind control spell on the butcher or even that the butcher is just a thrall.
kimmera
Where it is really BSing is when he uses that line but doesn't seem to realize you (as Dragonborn) are also the recently appointed Archmage, and that he is not 'in good standing' simply because he says so, particularly when you, the Archmage, consider him under investigation :) I don't think the butcher was a thrall, but since no one in any of the mage colleges in any of the games has ever challenged any of my characters or kicked them out for actively practicing necromancy, I suspect the whole 'edict' thing is more political than not.
