Character Naming Problem

I have a weird glitch on a vanilla game: in the original Helgen Racemenu character assembly all goes well until naming the character. I can only type in three letters before the box sweeps away and the character auto-saves. I kind of live with it but wonder how I can dig into the game either to fix this, or reset the name. No amount of twiddling with Showracemenu will alter this shortening - three letters and that's it. Hitting R will not stop this happening. On trying to enter the fourth letter the box vanishes as if I hit Save.

 

I had this a few games ago and only a brand new vanilla game stopped it. Unfortunately this game was absolutely vanilla as well.
