How to exit the game during a loading screen

So, every now and then I get an infinite loading screen, mostly in Whiterun. I would not as annoyed by these, if it weren't for one thing. I have to restart my computer to exit Skyrim when that happens.

Because of the way Skyrim handles full screen and loading screens, I am unable to do anything but shut my PC down when it does not load.

I have tried:

  • Tabbing out
  • Pressing F4
  • Pressing Alt + F4
  • Opening task manager

None of these work in the slightest, so I am always forced to restart. Does anyone know how to fully exit the game during a loading screen?

I get this same problem sometimes. It's not much better, but what I found that you can do is ctrl+alt+del and sign out. That will close skyrim and pretty much everything else. Saves a good 5 or so minutes over restarting. You still have to go through account startup processes such as waiting for your antivirus to re-activate or whatever, though. Hope this helps in some form.

Playing in windowed mode may help, it is proven (I am pretty sure) to increase FPS as well, for some reason Skyrim is bugggier while in fullscreen mode. This mod: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/36177/? edits how borderless window mode looks, so if you do not like the default look, then you have that option. Also, if you have installed this: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50305/?, then I recommend doing so. <--- May fix the earlier specified infinite load problem (probably will unless your infinite load screen is not caused by memory allocation). From the task manager, instead of trying to close the program on the Applications tab, Change to the Processes tab and kill the Skyrim process tree. Right click on the Skyrim.exe and pick end process tree from the drop down menu. This closes the game completely and instantly without trying to save anything and without trying to get you to wait while it tries to find a solution, or wait for you to do anything else.

Trying to close a program on the Applications tab, it tries to save some of your data before closing, and if you are already in a loop it can't do that.
