I'm no modding beginner I know how to look through my esp files and to trouble shoot and i have no mods like "kill every npc". but followers are easily slaughtered by enemies which isnt the worse thing in the world but Esbern dying all the time IS a pain in the ass.  my load order http://pastebin.com/fX4msW6W

You can use the console to set them essential.

 

setessential <ID> 1 to mark as essential
setessential <ID> 0 to mark as non essential

I use booth.

 

You are using Immersive Citizens. This mod gets NPC out & about more. The first thing I do when going to Whiterun is to set Uthgerd essential. If I don't she dies. The rest are covered by NPCs Protected Redux.
