THE ISSUE :
Crashing when running a modded setup of Skyrim. Always 15min after TESV launch with varied load orders, regardless of location and even in main menu or loading.

So I found a few solutions (credits to all the lovely people that pm me) :

  • Mod Organizer : Turns out the latest MO (v1.3.11) was the cause of my struggles. I found that one out by downgrading to v1.3.10 (just copy & overwrite the files, doesn't affect mods/profiles) I might just go and grab the github files and see what actually changed in these version for myself.
  • On-Screen Keyboard : Very useless thing always running since Windows 8 that for some people caused the same 15min crash as me and on various games. Just go in task manager and stop TabTip.exe. This program is the virtual keyboard basically only useful for touchscreen. (Thanks to @ninitea for the tip & the ppl who helped test this.)
  • Skyrim Launcher Permissions : An extra one because having options doesn't hurt anyone. (Thanks to @ninitea for helping out some more)

What this definitely isn't (At least scroll through these before you post.. please, I know you mean well but maybe I thought about what you want to suggest)

  • Did you try a new save? : I either make a new game or just open console and coc to some place.
  • Specific location? : I tested thoroughly (for 30 days now), doesn't matter where I am (inside, outside, worldspaces, menu, main menu)
  • You have a mod conflict? : All mods are properly updated, sorted, cleaned and all install instructions were followed to the letter. I also tried merge and bashed patches to no avail. More over, simply running only Unofficial Patches or SkyUI results in crashes (through MO)
  • Cleaned/Uncleaned DLC? : Tried both cleaned and uncleaned update + dlcs masters, still crash.
  • Too much mods / script heavy? :  You must be joking... I run simply SkyUI+DLCs and still crash.. Just read the one about mod conflicts.
  • Too much texture mods? : I used Ordinator and SMCO. Then just got rid of all texture mods too, still crashing...
  • Have you tried enboost? : Yes. without the gfx? YES..
  • Your rig is too weak? : I crash on main menu for god's sake... also check the TESV Monitor pics, my PC is not at all overburdened. Yes laptop but GOOD laptop...
  • Laptop then you must be overheating : you skipped those [TESV Monitor pics] didnt't you Just trust me... If I crash on the main menu my system specs are not responsible..
  • Laptop = Idle hdd! : No my HDD doesn't shut down after 15min. Also its 15min after idle. Running a game is not hdd being idle. Consider this a normal desktop, sure as hell configured as one..
  • I use NMM so MO is bad! : People reported this issue with both MO & NMM. Though I haven't tested NMM on my pc.
  • Your INIs are different!! : Nop, regenerating em twice didn't help either. But now they're default at least so yaay.
  • Speaking on default, Autosave runs every 15min!! : Not it either. I tried without autosaves and changing the time of that autosave to see if 15min crash becomes 5min one.
  • Corrupted Skyrim install? : Reinstalled 6x over the course of testing. Currently have 2 install (1 untouched to make sure skyrim works and 1 where I test). **Guess which one doesn't crash?**
  • SKSE is badly installed? : Reinstalled that too a few times. Fiddled with the Memory Patch options too (both more and less). Trust in me, I am no fool. (But keep SKSE in mind)
  • Windows 10 is bad? : This is going down since january. Win10/8 doesn't matter... I did try compatibility and running all the things as admin.
  • Did you turn it off and on again? :  Leave this place now satan. (Restarted and cold booted to skyrim+skse, same results...)

System Specifications : (please read before you post "laptop = weak", "get rid of texture mods" or "script mods too heavy" tips)

  • My rig (ASUS TP500 Laptop) : i7-5500U, 8G RAM, Geforce 840M with 2G DDR3, on Windows 10. Playing at 30-50 FPS using SKSE (Memory Allocation Patch -> 1Gig Total) and NO ENBs
  • Typical Memory Blocks Log : Block 1 : 248/768 | Block 2 : 119/256
  • Typical VRAM Usage : 500MB~1500MB (max 2048MB)
  • Typical RAM Usage : 1000MB~2300MB (max 8094MB)
  • Tools I use : Mod Organizer, LOOT v8, Wrye Bash (3.06), TES5Edit, Ordinator, SMCO, TexBlend. Tried ENBoost (no gfx) : same issues
  • NOTE : Occasionally while fiddling with mods I had a load order that survives the 15min mark, when I came back to it again later it would, 95% of the time, crashing.

CURRENT THEORY : What I'm thinking now is that it this has to either do with MO, some unknown process running things every 15min (doubt it) or some magical load order limitation that no one is aware of (whenever I add CRF, amidianborn mods, Thunderchild, moreHUD or Ruffled Feather the 15min crash goes back to crashing every single run...) Based on what the other person facing this issue is saying this seems to be MO's fault. I'll either test NMM or revert to and older version of MO and report back.

In the meantime, if any of you have an idea on how this can be fixed or you want to tell me that I'm completely wrong, please comment below.

Sheson I will sacrifice all the newborns to you, come save my damned skyrim.

Papyrus logs : (For the few magicians capable of analyzing this)
[Test 1] [Test 2] [Test 3] [Test 4] [Test 5]
(No crash) [Test 6](Should have errors from a few different runs)

TESV Monitor : Showing typical run (Notice Elapsed Time) TYPICAL 8 TESTS IN ONE BASHED PATCH

TEST RUNS

  • Test 1:
Open -> New Game -> Pick to join Companions -> Go to the bed -> Spawn inside jorrvarsk -> 2 members sparring (female has purple texture-less body *fixed*) -> exit to whiterun -> purple sprinnigan during loading sequence. -> Run around whiterun for a few minutes -> exit to skyrim -> loading hangs after a bit *(that's normal)* -> leave for a drink, come back, skyrim is gone. (papyrus 1)

  • Test 2 :
Open -> New Game -> Pick escape -> leave -> run around outside abandonned prison -> die, respawn -> run towards throat of the world -> crash 15min into execution time (papyrus 2)

  • Test 3 :
Same as test 1 except I stayed still in whiterun till the crash -> Particularities : statue of mara invisible, njada still has purple body, crossed aela and her body is weird and doesn't fit the head *fixed* and finally the papyrus log stopped 5min before the crash (I wasn't moving) -> crash 15min into execution time (papyrus 3)

  • Test 4 : (fixed texture/mesh issues...) (Got rid of most script mods)
Same as test 3 except I visited dragonsreach -> used tcl ran to azura statue and back -> crash 15min into execution time (papyrus 4)

  • Test 5 : (more texture optimizations) (Got rid of more mods)
Same as test 4 -> ran around whiterun -> left to skyrim and ran towards rorikstead -> exited after playing successfully for 30min (papyrus | TESV Monitor | Load Order)

  • Test 6 : (added back all mods I want, wrye bash conflict management, made a bashed patch
Stayed on main menu for 7min -> started new game -> chose to sail to dawnstar -> ran a bit then stood on barrel near docs till crash -> crash 15min into execution time (papyrus |TESV Monitor | Load Order)

Have you looked at temperatures? At almost exactly 15 minutes that sounds to me like overheating. Make sure your fan is actually pushing enough air and it's not clogged with dust or pet hair. :pinch:

Make sure to elevate the laptop so it gets good air circulation underneath. Do not play with you laptop sitting on a blanket as this kills any air circulation.

I feel like both of you skipped the What it Isn't Section but for the sake of double checking that I didn't screw up let me recap.

  1. In what universe is running skyUI or unofficial patches is heavy modding??? Please answer that.
    • Your rig is too weak : I crash on main menu for god's sake... also check the TESV Monitor pics, my PC is not at all overburdened. Yes laptop but GOOD laptop... Doesn't really matter if I have High Performance or Battery Saver since I still goddamn crash at that 15min mark.
    • Laptop!??! GHASP : No my HDD doesn't shut down after 15min. Also its 15min after idle. Running a game is not hdd being idle. Consider this a normal desktop, sure as hell configured as one..
  2. I listed my specs for a reason... To avoid your pc is weak talk.. It isn't... I play Witcher 3 on high at 1080p at 40-50fps. Have you been in the chat, people run 200+ mods on toasters compared to my rig. I also have 2 pcs with worse specs that run around 130 mods totally fine. Finally I crash on the main menu for chist's sake.
  3. In case you missed these TESV Monitor : Showing typical run (Notice Elapsed Time) TYPICAL 8 TESTS IN ONE BASHED PATCH
Click on them what do you find... Well my temp is normal for one (I had a test where i crashed at 52C) Ow and look at those ram bars never even reaching 1/3 of max VRAM....
  4. bben now that's just insulting.... I know you're trying to help but please, my fans are fine and circulation is great. I'm in IT, I'd rather shoot myself than put a laptop on my bed or a blanket.
EDIT : I took a look at your mod troubleshooting blog/forum to make sure I didn't miss anything and still no fix.

I feel like I covered this thoroughly in the original post but I guess I need to add the comment about temp in the what this isn't section.

lol i read your entire first post. Believe it or not. And i said that because of your mod list. Didnt you also say your game crashed even with everything unchecked? Your asking for help but being very condescending. If you know so much then why are you here?

Sorry if I come off as condescending but I do need help and I'm here because of that. I do know a lot but that doesn't mean that I don't occasionally need assistance. Couldn't have gotten this far without ppl on the chat.

Besides, just because 99% of posts here are easily solvable (up to intermediate level) doesn't mean that mine doesn't deserve to be here.

My mod list variations : Vanilla, Vanilla+DLCs, Vanilla+DLCs+Hires Pack, SKSE+DLCs+SkyUI

The weird thing is I am currently running DLCs+HiRes w/ SKSE and it doesn't crash running around whiterun. Yet yesterday I did the same thing and it crashed. Then did vanilla only and it also crashed.

There is something that I don't see in this picture. I said that previously I would get a load order that worked then add something to it, crash then come back to it and it would also crash.

Same for testing with skse, vanilla and running through MO. ->

It does seem truly random/specific to my Windows Installation then occasionally has one offs where everything works and throws off hours of testing.

So yes other issues.

None. At the time of starting the test vanilla was still working fine.
Now I know it has to be my system and since performance in other games more demanding games is not affected then I'm left with every single thing I have installed my system that can potentially interact with Skyrim including Windows itself.

Latest tests : MO+SKSE+SkyUI+ExtendedUI works. Activated a new mod -> crash. Came back to just SkyUI+ExtendedUI -> crash. Just SkyUI? Works. Just SkyUI again? Crash. Try Vanilla? Works. SKSE+DLCs? Crash
