Who to gank: Brotherhood or Institute?

Well, the point is why the Trotsky gang were not the most popular gang. They were also a danger for everyone else. The idea of continued violent internal revolutions, pretty much as a substitute for elections, was a danger to everyone in the central committee who wasn't an anarchistic idiot. Supporting someone more moderate was a no brainer.

Stalin pretty much just had to get rid of 3 idiots from the central committee to nerf that faction, and even then other than Trotsky himself eventually the other two came around.

Here it's a bit harder to see why the others would see it in their best interest to muzzle SR.

Well beyond that being not true because Stalin had WAY more opposition than the Trotskyities (the NEP crowd being one of them) let's discuss why SR is a danger to the rest of the Institute. Because they are the secret police of the organziztion; they threaten and bully and steal from other departments and have the coursers to back them up. That kind of power is very very dangerous, no matter who weilds it and SR has not been discreet with that power. It would be, if nothing else, like Hitler purging the SA in 1934; other Nazis may have worked with them, but very few were sad to see them go.

Plus, if you end production of Gen-3s and pursue a more hegemonic version of the Institute where infiltration is less neccessary because more overt control is in the Minutemen as the public face of your empire, SR can be wound down. SR exists because of a problem of the Institute's own making, unlike most other secet polices it's not critical to the survival of the regime.

It would be nice if you could organize a sit down with representatives from the various factions. Ostensibly under White Flag conditions, to negotiate some sort of power sharing arrangement. Would also present some interesting opportunities for Diplomacy/Betrayal scenarios.

I just don't like there is no way to get a moderate result (at least that I have found). Every group is too extreme. I really find the Nuclear Option unpalatable. The Future of Humanity will need their minds and Tech. I hope once the GECK is released many things that enable more cooperation between the factions is made possible. As it is I really hate them all.

I'd just take a "boot and lockdown" victory over the Institute, no rampantly destryoing valuable real estate. It's a Fallout tradition, and I didn't like it in Fallout 1. I would LOVE to see the Minutement take contorl of the Institute and use it as a safehouse and rapid response nexus.

A real important question for me, since I'm bascially taking out the SPAS MARINES anyway, which is a better pick to do it with if not the Institute? The Railroad way is awesome, but is it better for the Minutemen to have much needed glory?

Personally I kinda like the Minutemen, when I'm not going with the BOS, since they're really your faction. You're just one unfortunate accident befalling Preston away from being the High King of MA, so to speak.

I still think I could train them to be an actual military force.

Plus, if I had the leadership of basically the whole MA, I could do stuff like establish a bit more organization to my liking to the place. Like install a Jarl for each settlement to deal with daily stuff like "we need another water pump" or organizing the local militia. Establish a high Thing (ruling assembly) to help organize the place. Codify some laws and have each Jarl appoint a lawspeaker, so each settler can have all new laws and rules read to them at least once, and once a year be reminded of some of the existing rules.

Also, give them some religion. That big tree in Sanctuary Hills could make a pretty good holy tree, methinks. Hang some raiders from it and pierce them with spears, as a sacrifice and homage to allfather Odin, to put the fear of the gods in everyone else :p

Believe it or not, that's actually an honest question. I don't see it as good vs evil: I see it as the constant of the Brotherhood being an a**hole and the potential redemption of the Institute under your character's leadership. Yes the the Institute tinkered with FEV, but they also found a cure for it. Both factions will liquidate the Railroad. I honestly can't see the Minutemen and the Brotherhood not coming to blows at some point. The Institute is like Operation Paperclip:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Paperclip

We could have hung a good amount of those people, especially Werner von Braun. In stead, they helped us go to the moon. They, more or less, did all right without the toxic atmosphere of Nazi Germany, and it seems the Institute is waiting for someone to save them from themselves. If "Father" can't see your character's disgust at Synth creation/enslavement, he's a damn fool. I think even Father knows in his heart of hearts, the third generation Synths were a bridge too far, in any case he doesn't press his point convincingly and does seem concerned about your objections.

In a straight up contest between the Brotherhood and the Institute, the Institute I see as a wild card, dangerous and yet probably vital. The Brotherhood had it's chance in Owen Lyons, and they rejected it. But I( could see the Institute mass manufacturing GECKS, I see them curing the mutants, I see them going back to non-sapient second and first generation synths. No true good will ever come from the Brotherhood again.

My ultimate loyalty is with the Minutemen. But if given the choice between the big boys, which one deserves the gank more? Which one is the worst enemy of humanity? Which is the worst enemy of freedom?

Enemy of humanity: Instatits

Enemy of freedom: Brotherhood of s***

If the writting was not that terrible i'd go with the minutemen, not that i want a second NCR but, change in the commonwealth has to come from better organized and protected settlers who can build something and keep it up.

But the way they made the minutemen is just so frustrating, the whole whinning Preston treating you, the General, like some footsoldier is just so wrong. But enough has been said about that.

So, BoS, they are a second enclave or socialist like regime waiting to happen and lack the brain capacity to do anything. I know it's writting, but the way they treat you if you encounter them. Some cocky knight treating me like i'm nothing telling me "none of your business citizen, move along" even though i'm wearing fully restored and upgraded X01 power armor and would totally humiliate and crush him? Same for Danse, just a civilian? Just saved your ass and here is "a common commonwealther, with full X01 powerarmor a gauss rifle and a fatman" yes, great idea, lets treat him with disrespect and like s#*!. To me that totally sums up the BoS and the reason the Prydwin goes down every single time.

The institute, though hard, eventually my character can relate to Shaun and how he treated you as an experiment, the kid did grow up amongst detached from reality, convinced of their superior ideas scientists. Best line is the one where you tell Shaun, when do you eggheads learn. So having someone in charge who has both feet on the ground with one in the old world and one in the new world and leading the institute is imho the best thing in the long run for the commonwealth. If left alone, those scientists will do nothing, but with the right leadership they could really help this time and keep the commonwealth from infighting like tue first time they tried to help.
