Right now it seems like with the shelves you have to painstakingly place items manually just for them to fall over/glitch through the shelves and fall onto the floor. I've been craving a mod where you could open shelving or bookcases like an inventory, insert your items, and have them self file on the shelves. For example, I have a bar in one of my settlements that I've put shelving behind and want to display liquor, pitchers, glasses, chems, etc. Purely for aesthetic reasons!

This would be a cool return to the form of Skyrim's bookshelves. I wonder about how to handle the size of different items / how many points to map onto shelving for the items to stick to. Or do they not stick at all and instead you're just spawning objects at controlled points and letting physics do its job?

Questions that come to my mind:

Would you expect to add things in the usual container interface?

Add items based on arbitrary order?

Do you want to limit by some kind of category or be able to put anything on a shelf? This could lead to some hilarious visual glitches.

What about sparse/dense variants of these magic shelves? For instance I want sparse collection of ingredients so they don't clip into each other, and dense for your bottle decoration case so more can be packed together.

(edit: thought about physics)

I was thinking along the same lines as "skeeba". I am not a modder or programmer but I was thinking in regards to what skeeba was saying, that in the programming for shelves if you assigned a shelf with a total length, height, and width value and then did the same for all products that would normally fit on a standard shelf you could then in locker style open up the shelf menu, drop shyte into it and when the number of items exceeds the shelf length for example, no more thing would fit on the shelf and you would get a " shelf already full " message. When you back out of the shelf menu or locker menu, all the things you dropped into the locker would magically sort themselves out and place themselves on the shelf if that makes sense? You could also have a random order setting for shelves so things will either go on the shelf in the order you place them into the shelf menu or you could select "random" for a more varied look. And now as a person who knows f-all about how to do this I say "Make it Happen People !" :-), that just a joke... or is it?

I use the mod Do it yourshelf. It used to be on Nexus but it was removed due to the actions on the part of Nexus. It can be found on the Bethesda site under Do it Yourshelf by Crayon Kit. It works great for my bars and such as I can place bottles, etc. on shelves behind my bars. The mod includes both pre and post war shelves, clutter that specifically goes into the shelves (it also has refrigerators that you can stock with food) as well as items that you can place elsewhere on regular shelving from the game. I use it all the time. Unfortunately, it does come with a cost. Overdoing the placement of items gobbles up a lot of your building limit. Nevertheless, it is a regular in my load-order.

Check it out here. https://bethesda.net/en/mods/fallout4?author_username=CrayonKit&number_results=20&order=desc&page=1&product=fallout4
