What Skyrim Really Needs

The way I see it, the greatest problem with Skyrim system of adventure > loot > craft and repeat is that it comes with a very clear mandate.

From the moment you get the best weapon & armor in your level zone, that's it buddy. You're all set. Only reason you bother picking up an iron sword or steel sword or orc dwarf elf glass anything after you have that Daedric gear is to sell it. And that's not even half of it. Every level zone has a strict leveled loot possibilities. Most of the time your loot is just baggage for gold conversion. But to what end? You become super rich fast enough anyway.

Sadly, the more weapon&armor mods you have, the more noticeable this becomes. I think that's part of the reason why Beth never bothered to add more gear varieties. What's the point of having variants of weapon in the same level zone, when you're just gonna use the better one? Oh sure, trollbane and stormlord are both sooo cool yeah, but are you really gonna lug those heavy armors around for just that reason? I mean, you can't even wear them at the same time!

<Item Wear & Tear> This is what the game needs.

Imagine yourself cutting through a wave of draugr with your favorite ebony axe. But after the fray, the axe isn't looking too good. You fear you might do it some permanent damage. And what you do is you pick up an axe from your fallen foe and fight on! Or, maybe that's why you keep a back-up orc gear.

Now, I know what you're gonna say. "Oooh but that's already long discussed. How is this gonna be done? Edit the weapon entries? Make yet another one of those god-awful patcher things that scans for every piece of item I have and then pass out in error?"

But look at chesko's Frostfall 3.0. It achieves a similar function of adding warmth and coverage values via UI and some clever light-weight scripting.

What we'll need is a simple system of counting the hits you take thus bumping the armors&weapons improved at grindstone/workbench firstly to average state... and then more gradually to scrap metal. Probability factor should add to the realism. No new entries or modification needed, just some scripting. This can be done and expert modders who majored in scripting like chesko and isoku could probably do it without breaking a sweat.

I'm trying to teach myself how to do it. Messing around with CK and all... But, doesn't look like I'll elevate myself to this level anytime this year unless I get more breaks from work.

Well, what do you guys think?
