Witcher 2 Windowed Mode (2 Monitors)

Recommended Posts

Hello! i have recently loaded the Witcher 2 and went into Options via the launchers and changed "Fullscreen" to Disabled. I then picked the correct Screen Resolution and launched the game. My computer has two Monitors but Im running into an issue where i cannot move the game from one monitor to the other, once the game launches, it correctly shows all my programs going on in the background and is Windowed in my screen, but my mouse cannot move outside of the game (its locked in the Windowed game box), and when i Alt Tab out of the Witcher 2 to access a program I have on another monitor or in the background, my mouse no longer works and i cannot effect any of the programs running in the background till i Alt Tab back into the Witcher, where my mouse then correctly begins to work.

has anyone managed to find a way to resolve this issue? it doesn't prevent me from playing the game, just prevents me from accessing what i enjoy most about my gaming computer (haven't been full screened into a game since before Diablo 2), in addition to being unable to move the game to the HD monitor without re-arranging all the settings i have set up on my computer. I'm hoping for an easy fix, as it would immensely improve my enjoyment of this game.

thank you very much for your help.

Hello!

im still running into this issue, i think that turning off Full screen in the options isn't really a "Windowed mode", it simply makes the game smaller but is considered full screen for all intents and purposes. is the traditional way of messing with the games shortcut and adding -w to still work to resolve this issue?

Just tried the -w in both the launcher shortcut and witcher exe and still starts in fullscreen on both

You might try changing your user ini file located in Documents>Witcher 2>config . Under rendering scroll down to fullscreen and if it`s a 1 change to 0

I have found out how to do it! and this post helped a bunch as i was really over thinking the situation, iv noticed that sometimes in games -w just doesn't cut it.

I had left the Full Screen Disabled on the Launcher Options, I had picked the Resolution I wanted that best fit my Screen, I went to C:\Program Files (x86)\The Witcher 2 where I had loaded the game, after some fishing around, I located the witcher2.exe File in the \bin\ folder of the game, this let me get around the Launcher, if you click on this it takes you directly into the game and its main menu.

I made a Shortcut of the witcher2.exe File and put it on my desktop, I then followed the traditional way of making a program Windowed as you would for something like Daiblo 2, I added -window to the end of the Target field so it looked like this "C:\Program Files (x86)\The Witcher 2\bin\witcher2.exe" -window

after that any time I clicked on the shortcut i launched the game in a Windowed Mode, the difference between this and the way the game has it set up to reduce Full Screen in the Launcher Options, is that while I am typing this I have the Game going on my other monitor, now, you may not have two monitors, but this frees you up to Alt+Tab out of the game or even move your mouse to a background program and update your facebook status, change movies or music you have playing, or anything else you might do while playing The Witcher 2. while disabling the full screen option is much much easier, i disliked having my mouse locked into the Witcher 2 Game and having to be forced to exit the game to do anything in my background, this way resolved that issue no problem!

Really excited to finally dive into this game full tilt. :D thanks for your help! see you in a few weeks when I finally resurface for air :D

Is this the Steam or boxed version?

I just tried your technique with the Steam version, and it didn't work - \bin\witcher2.exe still activates the launcher instead of going straight into the game.

(This is really annoying me. Windowed should mean Windowed. I should be able to access my second monitor, and I should be able to reposition the game window so that it isn't hiding behind my taskbar. I feel like I've suddenly jumped 10 years back in time).

Changing the .ini file helped. If I Alt-Tab out, I can then move the cursor back and reposition the window so that it doesn't block the taskbar, but it's still not ideal.

  • 8 years later...

I had it set to windowed mode (launcher > options > fullscreen disabled aka config file > fullscreen = 0) and even though it allowed me to alt+tab out to other applications, it still covered my entire screen when running. Turns out I had the screen resolution (launcher > options > screen resolution) set to exactly the size of my monitor, so the edges of the window were of the screen and I couldn't drag the window to the other monitor. Even if the edges of the game window are visible though, it's pretty clunky to try to drag it then tab to another window.

The best workaround I found was just to decide which monitor I want the game window to live on, then set that as my main display in Windows display settings. The launcher will automatically open the game instance on the main display.
