Blender & gimp: best way to uv map and how to improve my textures?

So im trying to get back in to modding and so far have done this.

and, well as you can see i need to improve my texturing a lot.

so first place would be the uv map so i was just wondering how the more experienced modders get their uv maps?

 

right now im marking my seams and just doing a plain old unwrap but, is that the best way? would unwrapping from view be better?
