Disapperaing shadows when moving/turning

Recently noticed that when I'm moving shadows disappering and reappearing around me supposedly depended on my camera angle. Check these out (look at the tree shadow on the right):

And that's doesn't need any explanation, just turned camera left and right a bit:

Pretty wierd stuff, right?

So, I surfed for hours in attempt to find a fix, nothing worked so far. Things I've tried:

bDeferredShadows=1 to 0

Every possible tweak from here (from posts too):

It wasn't like that before, no idea why it started suddenly, and what it may be connected to. I have no graphical improvement mods installed, only Skyrim HighResTex patches with USKP fix for them. Even more wierd thing, I set:

fInteriorShadowDistance=3000.0000 to 0
fShadowDistance=4000.0000 to 0

Set SkyrimPrefs.ini to read only and NOTHING CHANGED! All shadows remained as they were as on screenshot above, like game doesn't even refer to SkyrimPrefs.ini file, though shadows should have vanished completely, right? But FOV and Grass fixes are read fine, any gameplay or graphic settings I change in game are reflected in SkyrimPrefs.ini and Skyrim.ini correctly.

Any ideas?

I don't know if is similar but I been trying to fix some disappearing shadows (only when I move they disappear) might be a rendering problem.

Also have in mind that Saves can get Corrupted, maybe try a fresh New Game.

The only other posts I saw are about Oldrim and are very different bugs.

What I found useful for others bug fixes is just manually order your plugins, LOOT sometimes doesn't know where to put plugins, I had WICO plugins almost on top and that made some NPCs faces grey/dark (fixed leaving WICO plugins on bottom before Batch Patch)

I have this exact problem too. While I don't know what causes it, it seems to happen more often when I am experimenting with my load order or trying / removing new mods, basically restarting the game often. After I have settled on a load order and restarted my PC, it seems to go away (but I'm not sure about this).

I'm using custom ini shadow settings like:

bDisableShadowJumps=0
fSunShadowUpdateTime=0
fSunUpdateThreshold=0.2

There's a small chance those ini settings are causing this.

Other than that, maybe Windows 10's superfetch (sysmain) service keeps some fragment of the old load order in memory from the last time the game was run with a different load order a few minutes ago. Restarting my PC clears this. Yea, I know this is unlikely, but I cant help but wonder...

OMG, restarting my computer worked for me. ty ty ty!

I wonder why restarting fixed it. I’ve also been playing around with my LO a lot. I wonder what windows is holding on to that gets cleared.

EDIT: Problem is back, made no changes. Resume troubleshooting.

I had this exact problem, but in reverse: shadows disappear in exterior cells while standing still (to be more specific, with the camera in a fixed position). In first person, you can pan and tilt without a change, but the moment you move, shadows break. In the third person, you can trigger the bug by looking around, because you're moving the camera.

I also noticed that shadows cast from light sources would be long at noon and midnight, and short at dawn and dusk. Also, they'd point in incorrect directions (like towards the sun).

I resolved both problems by disabling competing SSAO renderers. Specifically, I disable Skyrim SE's SSAO and let ENB do all the lifting. I haven't tried the opposite, because it's working again and I'm not going to tempt fate. If it suddenly stops working, I will update this post.

I used BethINI > Detail tab > Shadows section > untick Ambient Occlusion. Within SkyrimPrefs.ini:

[Display]
bSAOEnable=0

I am specifically using a manually cleaned version of Enhanced Lights and FX with Exteriors, Obsidian Weathers and Seasons, SkyrimSE Re-Engaged ENB, and all the patches and presets that make them play nice with each other.

It took me 14 hours to figure it out, because this problem seems very rare. I am not denvercoder9.

I am having the exact same issue - same thing where it randomly started up on both my saves, changing mods and ini settings has no effect, but restarting my PC fixes it. I have recently upgraded PCs, so possibly it's a computer/graphics driver issue rather than a Skyrim-specific issue? I am on a 2070 Super, previously a 1660 Super (where the problem never occurred).

I am using ELFX (with exteriors) and Relighting Skyrim (tailored for ELFX, from Lexy's guide), Obsidian Weathers, Rudy's ENB with Nyclix's Reshade (old version).

:edit: I have found that disabling ELFX completely has solved the issue, I'll test around and see whats really the issue with ELFX, I'm using only the ELFX enhancer esp along with the main enhanced lights and FX esp.

has anyone reliably fixed the issue?

Same thing just started happening to me yesterday. I've just started testing a new build and I'm incrementally installing about 5 mods at a time and then testing them, sometimes starting a new game each time depending on the nature of the mods.

I have a 2070 super video card and ENB loaded (no presets yet, but I plan to use Re-Engaged). No weather or lighting mods installed either, though I plan to use Obsidian and ELFX. When the problem happens, ALL shadows disappear when I move my character or even look around in 1st person or in 3rd person mode. Usually an exit to the desktop and restart of Skyrim fixes it. I haven't had to reboot the whole PC yet because I'm still loading mods and testing. I just upgraded the video driver and turned off Ambient Occlusion in Bethini per other's suggestions. My first test after that showed no problem, but it's been hit or miss (completely random) up to this point.

I do have Improved Camera Beta 4 loaded in case that's a common factor. Also, when I turn off ENB in the game using SHIFT-F12 the problem is still there. Only a restart of the game fixes it. A reload of a save doesn't fix it.

It seems to be something related to cache and shadows. Try to go to Nvidia Control Panel -> Program Settings. Look for Skyrim-SKSE and check Shadow cache or something like that (i am not sure about the name, spanish user in my case). I have the same problem and disabling It solved the problem. Hope it works for you
