No Music playing in FONV during start-up or on any radio station

I recently bought a new hard drive to keep all my games on.

I moved content per Steam's instructions. Not even considering the MODs I had on there I validated content through Steam.

I had MODs: NVSE, NVAC, and Wave Radio installed.

After the move only Wave Radio MOD played any songs and there was no music in the load screens

There is now no music during startup and no radio songs when launching through NVSE or the regular exe. I can hear Mr. New Vegas and other voice files, but the rest is silent.

Per other forum suggestions I have:

Validated files.

Removed all MOD content and reinstalled and validated.

Uninstalled and reinstalled through Steam deleting the FONV folder after uninstall.

Uninstalled and reinstalled through Steam deleting the FONV folder before uninstall.

Reinstalled Combined Community Codec Pack resetting to default settings.

Made sure I have only one default audio device.

 

I'm at the end of my rope and about to quit playing even though I promised myself I would finish before buying Fallout 4.

 

RNV is the only Songs folder in the sounds no matter how many times and in what way I reinstall and it does not play in game. It is almost like Steam has saved old .ini s and will not do a clean install?

You don't mention if you have tried renaming both the INI files in the "C:\Users\<YourAccountName>\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV" folder, and let the game rebuild them. (Verifying and even reinstalling doesn't remove/overwrite them, and that is where your problem is most likely to reside if it isn't a missing file.) You do need to initially run the vanilla launcher after you verify/re-install as well so it will initialize your video settings and INI files that do not exist.

Thank you. I am very grateful for the quick response, but no success yet.

Tried the above and a process to delete and Steam cloud .ini s.

Tried uninstalling and deleting all local content except saves, turning off all Steam cloud and reinstalling.

Still frustrated. Thinking about resetting Windows to clear whole registry in case it is a DirectShow or DX issue caused by recent wonky VLC install that I removed (latest VLC version is intrusive and packed with spyware apparently), but non-MODded Skyrim and all other games/programs are running fine in Steam/all other programs, so still convinced of bad Steam cloud process caused by cloud uploading my alterations to the original install.

 

Can someone tell me what the FONV Data/Sounds folder looks like normally?

You imply that the game is installed on your new drive, and that it is NOT your "C:" drive. So I am assuming you do not have Steam installed to the "C:\Program Files" folder. IF that is not the case, read the "Installing Games on Windows Vista+" article in my signature and move it. (That alone resolves many strange problems.)

If you only have the RNV folder after "verifying" files, then it didn't work. Check that RNV didn't change the permissions on the "sounds" folder.

 

If everything else sound related (other games, voices, gunfire, etc.) is working, then it's basically a "mod conflict". Codecs might conflict with a specific game; especially DirectShow is known for it. But the K-Lite codec pack usually will correct the problem in that instance.

 

Check your Windows sound control panel and ensure you don't have the wrong device selected or a music/wave volume zeroed out. Correct speaker/headphone setup is important, but if it works for basic Windows sounds it should be fine, unless you have something else in the game "Audio" settings.

 

Something else to bear in mind, though it is more general in application than your specific problem. There are unseen and unpredictable interactions between the video, mouse, and sound drivers. Sometimes an update to one can affect the others. Occassionaly you need to back out a recent update.

You are correct it was never installed on the C:, but Steam always was. On the machine C: Is a 120 GB SSD for the OS.

It was installed on a G: That was being used as storage.

I bought a faster 1TB to use for Games and Video it is now X and is now the default Steam install drive.

The machine is my family HTPC and couch gaming rig so time and convenience is the main factor when trying to fix this. I am very grateful for your quick and excellent responses. And I download Klite and will give the game one more try.

What I think happened that I am unable to investigate unless I reset windows 10 which I am not doing because no other games or programs have issues:

NV was my only MODded game

NV was the only game that I moved any data on the local machine for. All others I just uninstalled and reinstalled on the new drive with Steam.

My thesis is that every error caused by my amateur MODding and move (ini s pointing to the wrong drive, accidental deletions and alterations of files) was uploaded by Steam and is now considered the default install for that game and apparently there is no real reset on this?

I bought FO4 last night and if it plays perfectly tonight when I fire it up I will move on with life sans NV.

Don't have time to try and prove to Steam that the problem is not with my local machine and demand a fix.

I wish they had a Factory reset button for their downloaded games.

If you uninstall the game via Steam properly, clean out the "C:\Users\<YourAccountName>\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV" folder content (just move/rename the "saves" folder and delete the rest of that "FalloutNV" folder), reboot, and then install from Steam again, this time installing it to your new drive. Now you should be fine as far as the vanilla game AND the system registry goes. Don't skip the reboot, as it is necessary to ensure the registry and any associated drivers are flushed from the system. (The codec issue should be separate as it is part of the OS.)

 

Proper uninstallation:

1. Login to the Steam Client.

2. Click the "Library" tab at the top of the screen.

3. On the left hand side of the "Library" screen there will be a listing of all the games tied to your Steam account.

4. Right click the game to be uninstalled and select "Delete Local Content..."

5. A confirmation box will pop up.

Depending upon the game there may be a separate DRM revocation step (to return an install count use to you), but that is unlikely in the case of Steam which is it's own DRM manager.
