Occassional CTD - Tips on creating stable load order

Hello everyone and thanks in advance for any help you can give

I have skyrim running pretty stable with a little over 90 mods with around the same amount of plugins but it's far from perfect. I can usually get 1.5 to 2.5 hours of playing without ctds but it could be as little as an hour. It's most common when loading a save and the only thing i haven't done yet to improve stability is organised my load order, so far I've just used loot. I have a bashed and merged patch, the ssme memory patch (had some issues with the skse method), i have enboost and I've cleaned my masters. the load order is the one thing i have left to do and it's the one i'm least looking forward to because i honestly don't know where to begin.

I know the basics of what the load order is from gopher's videos but knowing what types of mods get priority over others i have no idea.

So if anyone has any helpful guides or opinions on what should be high up or low down in the load order i'd greatly appreciate it

I also have a my load order written below

thanks again for any help i really want to get skyrim stable so i can actually enjoy it

By the way feel i should mention i have quite a strong pc - gtx 970, i54670k and 16gb of ram just in case this info was helpful

Hello you alone,

<I can usually get 1.5 to 2.5 hours of playing without ctds>

  • You may use the method below to enlight the conflicting entries of your load order and masks the rest. LOOT doesn't show that. With 113 mods, the results. This may help you to refine your load order and eventually decide to move or remove some conflicting mods.
Load all your mods with Tes5edit and use the (right-click in the left pane) apply filter to show conflict losers.
    - Wait till Tes5edit has finished. Caution : don't try to modify anything while using this filter, it's not intended for.
In the left pane, Expand the subsections and examine conflicts.
    - Once an entry is expanded to the bottom and selected, the right pane shows which mods modify the entry. The last one on the right is the last loaded in your load order.
  • Creating a merged patch with Tesedit can help, be sure to delete every leveled item entry from it and let the bashed patch handle it.
  • Create a wryebash patch >> already done.

Hope this helps

some tips on creating a stable game period as well as stable load order.....

1. Install ENBoost.

2. SKSE + Memory patch

3. Texture optimization. Save as much vram as possible and eliminate bloat.

4. The most common cause of people coming here with posts about frequent ctds is lazy modding. This is the person who just goes through nexus installing popular mods they like without reading instructions, descriptions, and no thoughts of compatibility.

With that said always read the descriptions and follow mod authors instructions for installation and load order. Load order instructions usually are only provided when it requires specific placement.

5. Continuing with last point about lazy modding. It is very important to test your game after every few esps or large texture mods.....always always test for performance and stability. Waaaay easier to catch and solvve issues that way. If you install 50 mods without testing and you have issues you will have no clue when or where it started.

6. Clean your masters.

7. Run LOOT each time you install a mod with a plugin.

8. Use Mod Organizer. It is simply a far superior tool.

also as mentioned above if you are ever unsure if x is compatible with y its VERY easy to view conflicts in TESEdit.

Final point is people with large load orders most of the time didnt build those overnight....at least not the ones who got them stable. They built it slowly over time testing and adding and removing.

I personally might get 1 crash every 10 hours or so and my performance is really good as well. I put a TON of thought into each mod i install. Nothing goes in just because.

Thanks for all the tips mentioned above.

I did some tinkering with my load order to try and decide what would have priority over something else and i also messed with my enblocal.ini with reserved memory settings and so far my game is way more stable. I've played 4 hours so far (for testing purposes tbh i would only normally play 3 hours max) and it hasn't crashed so at least things are going in the right direction.

With regards to the bashed patch. Should i tick the names and stats box or just the leveled lists box?

Also you mentioned the conflicts being shown by tes5edit aren't they already shown by mod organizer i.e the lightning bolt symbol with the + or - next to the mod to show what it's overwriting or being overwritten by.

<With regards to the bashed patch. Should i tick the names and stats box or just the leveled lists box?> More specifically, the bashed patch manages better leveled items, for the rest I don't know. Just ensure if 'you're using merged and bashed patch they don't cover the same entries.

<Also you mentioned the conflicts being shown by tes5edit aren't they already shown by mod organizer i.e the lightning bolt symbol with the + or - next to the mod to show what it's overwriting or being overwritten by.> I can't tell I don't use MO.

and regarding conflicts in MO.....you can view what overwrites what and whats being overwritten by what in MO and move things around without uninstalling and reinstalling.

But TESEdit will give a more in depth look, Use all the tools at your disposal and take your time.

When you build your list just always keep conflicts and compatibility in mind. If two mods are doing the same or similar things......might wanna remove one.

Thats also why reading descriptions is key. Mod authors almost always mention compatbility and patches on their pages if needed.
