Skse command prompt hanging problem.

Hey guys

So I've run into a rather technical issue with SKSE, this happened pretty much randomly as far as I'm aware. As in I wasn't having this problem the night before and made no changes aside from playing the game. Next day I go to launch skyrim again through SKSE and the cmd box hanged there for about 25seconds before it went away and the game launched normally.

Just to clear any potential confusion, this is what im talking about that's hanging.

The game itself runs fine, no changes there, it's just this extended time period that I have to wait before it will launch. Usually that box disappears after a mere second, suddenly its almost half a minute. I've tried verifying my cache, reinstalling the game, deleting various files like skse plugins and enbs, and of course rebooting my computer, nothing has worked. I even tried removing everything aside from the vanilla game and skse. I also tried reinstalling skse.

I know this might sound crazy, as waiting 25 seconds isn't a big deal really. But as a modder, testing things involves launching the game and closing it very very often which was already tedious with the normal launch speed, so you may understand why I want to fix whatever is causing this issue.

May be simply because your specs need more time to load all your mods and corresponding resources.

  • Untick all your mods from launcher / mod manager and start your game, (just keep the vanilla masters). If the game doesn't want to start mods unticked, use save script cleaner and try again.
  • If above worked, tick again your mods and preferably choose the less demanding resources ones.
  • Did you make any changes others than these to your skse.ini ?

    [General]
    ClearInvalidRegistrations=1
    EnableDiagnostics=1
    [Display]
    iTintTextureResolution=2048
    [Memory]
    DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=768
    ScrapHeapSizeMB=256
    [interface]
    EnableContainerCategorization=1
    [Debug]
    WriteMinidumps=1

Good luck

Hi there!

As I said I tried launching with nothing additional in the data folder aside from the vanilla assets and esms. I haven't changed my skse settings at all, and changing them to the ones you linked didn't make any impact.. When the problem occurred it was literally after me having played for a while, closing the game, and then relaunching it later, during the interim I did nothing to skyrim. I am unsure how it could be my specs when it was fine one minute with the load I have and not the next. Skyrim will also launch at regular speed without skse.

Now what I can recall, and that I saw in a similar post, is that windows did an update around when this started happening. Honestly that's the only real change I can think of before it started happening, though he mentioned his was a windows 10 update, I'm still on 8.1.

Thank you for your help and suggestions though, I appreciate it :smile:

Edit: One thing I will try later, is reverting back to an old version of my skyrim folder, as I make backups every month or so. I will revert back by a month or two, then we can see if it's anything to do with my skyrim folder, or if some update has made skse run slow.

You're welcome. There is another topic here.

<Honestly that's the only real change I can think of before it started happening, though he mentioned his was a windows 10 update, I'm still on 8.1.>

  1. It seems this problem is happening on different operating systems so I'm not sure an update is the cause of a part of it.
  2. It doesn't prevent skse to work apparently, but just delay the game. That makes me think about everything skse is connected : plugins, savegames, mods, security softwares, etc...
  3. You're not alone, see here.

Voila some ideas on the fly :

  • Make sure you don't use redundant memory tweaks like SSME : check in your skyrim folder if you have a d3dx9_42.dll + ssme.ini. Don't use both.
  • Create exception rules in your firewall / antivirus / antispyware concerning skse_loader.exe + skse_steam_boot.exe. Some security programs may have had an update that makes changes in the way it annalyzes threats. You may also exclude, if possible skyrim entire directory from sandbox or such programs. You may also activate an eventual gaming mode but I'm not sure if it'll be enough. Ensure every option above is managed to remove any security software issue.
  • Make sure the security level in above softwares is default and consequently not too high, particularly with heuristic engine. This can make weird things sometimes.
  • Have a look at your C:\Users\Utilisateur\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Saves\ skse files and make sure they are not too big and that your save folder doesn't have a billion saves... For example my character is level 90 and my skse saves are 13 ko. The bigger your skse saves are, I suppose the more skse mods you're using and I'm not sure skyrim can handle everything.
  • Test skse loading on a new game but before that, empty your save folder, (make a backup first). Deactivate your skse mods temporarilly. If you don't know which ones, deactivate all.
  • With mods deactivated, uninstall your other C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim\Data\SKSE\Plugins\, try first to cut/paste them in another folder to invalidate them temporarilly.

Thanks again for the suggestions

I tried everything you suggested, and I did infact have SSME as well as d3dx9_42.dll so I removed ssme. However none nothing has worked. Game still starts up and runs fine once its launched on a new game with no mods enabled other than vanilla and no saves in the folder. I made the entire skyrim folder an exception to my antivirus program, as well as windows firewall, still takes half a minute for the skse command prompt to disappear.

Ok then it's not time lost as you know now the problem is elsewhere. The question is where.

  • If you didn't have any ssme.ini, your d3dx9_42.dll is probably a part of another plugin or ENB thing, so you should not delete it.
  • Are you using a shortcut from skse loader.exe ? If you have installed skse manually, could you install it via steam and run it with a right-click on systray steam icon / skyrim script extender (skse) ? If so, does it make a difference ?

  • Skse plugin preloader I don't know if this could help...

I have this too. Just started yesterday. Have gone back to my Vanilla profile with MO, checked my skse.ini. No changes.

I'm running Windows 7. So strange that it began affecting many people at the same time.

I will follow this thread to see what develops.

Installing skse via steam seems to bypass the problem. I run it from the system tray and it immediately loads the game, I then tested a spell I made that uses a skse function and it works fine. Running skse manually through the folder still causes the hanging though. I'll have to play for a bit to make sure its actually working properly, but it seems fine.

I had the plugin preloader already, I actually tried removing it as I thought that may have caused the delay but it doesn't.

Thanks a lot for your help darstyler, it seems it might be a problem with running through steam manually?
