CTDs, Reinstallation, and Seeking Guidance Using the CK

Recommended Posts

So, I was attempting to create a custom playable race based off of the MCU's Loki (Small, more human-looking frost giant). I created the race itself with no bugs at all, except the easily-fixed floating head in the showracemenu. When I went to add a bound icicle (functions like bound sword) as a power, though, the CK crashed, and crashed on opening even with no data files loaded, and the game ctd'd after the Bethesda logo, even with the mod disabled, even with the mod deleted.

Now, I've done a fresh re-installation, and everything works okay, but I still would like to create this. I think I may have an idea as to what caused the problem (texture assignment), but I would rather not go on ahead unless I can find out for certain what caused the problem, because re-installing is a pain in the neck.

This is what I did: I got the entire race created, including stats and skin tones, and was adding powers. The 80% resistance to frost worked, and I was able to apply a renamed bound sword as a power (JotunIceBlade), which I proceeded to edit back, until I got to applying the texture to it. I used the ice projectile, and as soon as it was applied to the spell, the CK crashed, the game crashed.

My hypotheses to the reason for this are:

1. The texture I assigned was not in the weapons folder like the bound sword was.

or 2. Unpacking the textures from the BSA into the data folder caused some kind of weird overwrite that messed things up.

I believe the first to be most likely, but I'd like that to be affirmed, and, if possible, shown if I should create a copy in the weapons folder or create a new texture etc. or anything else to make it work.

Also, this is related to the mod but not related to the problem-- would anyone know how to trigger a temporary change in skin tone and eye color when hit with a spell or enchantment that causes frost damage? I'd like to overwrite the glowy frost effects for player or race only, so that instead of glowing it shifts skin tone to blue (I've already made the skin tone) and eyes to red (Already allocated as well). If you don't know how to do that, but know how to answer the CTD problem (because if need be I can just forget the appearance shift), please help me out a bit!

Thanks!
