Mod Request - Hardcore or Death Counter

me and some friends would like the ability to initiate a hardcore mode and just delete the saved file on death.

Or a way to track the number of deaths for comparison.

Would this be particularly difficult? I have coding experience but not modding experience I might take a look at how to do this myself any advise in where to get started?
