Game is freezing, but only in menus.

For some reason, my game randomly crashes in menus. Be it the Loot menu, Inventory, a book, the ESC menu, option menu, it has a chance to freeze. I have tried multiple fixes, but nothing works.

I'm having this problem too and nothing seems to work. Did you manage to solve it? I can only play for like 10 minutes at the time right now

I get the crashes even when I don't have mods enabled. And I get them both with and without the unofficial patch

This is most definitely a mod conflict issue. Beware of the outdated mods as most of them already have healthy alternatives: http://wiki.theassimilationlab.com/tescosi/Popular_Outdated_Mods

Install mods one by one instead of bunch of them at a time and take a look at the best possible modding tool you can find for Oblivion: https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/22368

Use BOSS to sort the plugins for you: https://boss-developers.github.io

If the issue persists, send us your load order and we will see what we can do.

A note about using Wrye Bash (WB) and BOSS ... WB no longer supports BOSS, but that doesn't mean you can't use the two together. You won't be able to run BOSS from within WB but BOSS does a fine job sorting all but the more recent mods in Oblivion (I believe that LOOT is getting better at sorting Oblivion mods, but I've never used it myself so I can't say that with any authority).

To use BOSS plus WB just turn off Lock Load Order in WB and run BOSS from it's desktop shortcut (the BOSS GUI version). For newer unrecognised mods I just set up a User Rule from the BOSS GUI. If you look at the BOSS Masterlist (which is just a text file that opens in Notepad) you can search for similar mods to the one you're setting up a User Rule for (Notepad's Find off the Edit menu works great ... search for the actual ESP file name of the similar mod). I start out by setting up the User Rule to sort the unrecognised mod after the last mod listed in that section of the BOSS Masterlist and do some testing to look for any anomalies in-game.

A good place for info on using WB is the two readmes ... Wrye Bash General Readme.html and Wrye Bash Advanced Readme.html, both found in the Oblivion\Mopy\Docs folder.

Yes, it makes sense, I should have probably pointed out that LOOT is getting better at sorting Oblivion mods, but I would still prefer BOSS over it. Either way, I am still making my own TES4Edit patch to prevent any additional conflicts. As mentioned, BOSS has strict rules and fixed number of mods it supports (you can change the mastelist.txt yourself, od course), but if you are looking for a more flexible tool, LOOT is the way to go. You would not have to tinker around load order as much and LOOT is still being worked on (LOOT is BOSS' successor).
