Game CTDs once, every time, but not after.

Hi! This isn't a serious problem, but I'll post in case anyone happens to know what's going on.

For a long time, now, my game has CTD'd the first time I try to load a save (right as the loading screen finishes), but then if I try to do it again, it loads fine and works okay. I basically don't get crashes while playing.

  • This has persisted for months now, and doesn't occur 100% of the time.
  • This only works when loading the same save.
  • I am using MO to manage and sort mods (built-in LOOT).
  • I regularly use a save cleaner. (Save Tool)
  • I have uninstalled lots of mods and installed lots of mods - it persists unchanged.
  • This has occurred across different characters and happens even in very new games.
  • Changing any mod stuff within MO between launches "resets" the behavior.
  • I run at 2560x1080 and use FW to handle the 21:9. but this problem is much newer than that.
  • All my super embarrassing mods: https://modwat.ch/u/coldharmonics
  • If this were any other game all these errors would scare me: http://puu.sh/ryfI0/83da4ddf64.log
  • If you have any questions ask.

I'm kinda tempted to try that main menu anticrash mod but it seems like then I might start loading bad saves which would ultimately cause real problems. I'm almost 100% sure this behavior is something to do with one or more mods and MO, not the saves themselves, since it occurs with any sort of save, clean, new game, or such, and the CTD happens *after* the load the screen is finished, right as it disappears. Like when the VM thaws or something.

Not a big deal but if you have ideas that'd be cool. Thanks!

Do have Multiple Version of MO installed for different games, or the Same Game with "SKSE like" start up short cuts on your desktop? Cus I do & when I switch versions using the Short Cuts it sometimes Crashes like you described. I consider it minor inconvenience. If you launch MO first, then run SKSE it loads fine when switching versions.

Are you using Crash Fixes? Might be worth giving that a try and if you already are it will report some of the reasons it crashes to help narrow down the problem. If you get a specific error message you can search on that to see what might help.

Looking at your load order though I see you are using OSA with a poser module which would include lots of animations. Having lots of animations tends to cause the dreaded FootIK crash when loading save games which there isn't any way to really fix. One thing you can do to see if this is in fact the problem is to open the console in the main menu and enter "coc qasmoke" and then load a save game once you are in the qasmoke cell. If that consistently works for you and the game runs stable after loading then there really isn't much you can do to remove the loading crash unless you remove mods like OSA.

I have MO for fallout 4 as well, both are portable versions that don't know eachother exist (they're even on separate drives). I always launch the game through MO > SKSE.

I've heard there are incompatibilites with Crash Fixes and ENB / SKSE memory management? I never really considered using it because one of the problems I've never really had is ingame crashes, and with all my mods it's impressive I'm not having any RAM issues - I'd like to keep it that way.

Come to think of it this did start to happen around the time I got OSA. I could try cutting down on poser sets - I hardly ever use most them anyway. I'll try the qasmoke thing. I haven't heard of the FootIK crash? I'll look into a bit bit, too. I'll update this sometime, once I have more info - thanks!

Using the coc qasmoke trick worked reliably. I installed the Continue Game No Crash mod and do not experience crashing anymore! I believe it was a result of my animation mods, as I have lots and lots of idles installed (like over 7k according to FNIS). Either way it's resolved now. I don't like putting a patch on a leaky pipe but Skyrim wasn't designed to handle this much. Thanks!
