Porting K2 models to K1

I apologize if this topic is against the forum rules. If there's a warning, I did not see it. LucasArts seems to have had policies that would have forbidden to take K2 assets and make them available to people who might only own K1 but not K2. But since LucasArts is no more, I have no idea whether those policies are still in effect or where to look for them or whom to ask for such things...

I tried to port K2 body and head models to K1 with MDLOps 0.7alpha and ran into a few problems:

  1. When porting a body model from K2 to K1 I ran into animation problems. Specifically the animations for the left arm - the right arm worked fine for some reason - and the legs (walking/running) did not work in K1. Left arm and legs basically remained motionless as I played the game with the K2 model.
  2. When porting a head model from K2 to K1 I ran into offset problems. The neck of the body model and the head model did not connect. The head was not attached to the body but displayed slightly to the back and to the right of the body model. This happened regardless of whether I used a K1 or a K2 body model.

Does anyone have an idea what I did wrong?

Id make sure everything is named correctly. The files from Kotor 1 are not named like the files from Kotor 2 which if all other animations worked and let's say the left arm animation is not the same for Kotor 2 that would explain the frozen parts. (Not having animation) as for the head issue I'd try also import the bodies from k2 and use k2 heads on k2 bodies.

Modding will take alot of trial and error and while the games are in the same series they had Bethesda for the first and the sith Lords was worked on by obsidian. Two different companies.

Sadly it is trial and error at this point but I hope you can work it out and post your mods on Nexus, I bet they would be good.

Good luck and I apologise I can't help more.

TBH, and as a former admin (Darth333) of Lucasforums (not to be confused with Lucas Arts) and more particularly of the KotOR forum which was the primary KotOR modding place at the time, Lucas Arts never had such a formal and official policy to my knowledge.

Lucasforums (LF) adopted a very conservative "no porting" policy at the time that may have stuck on the KotOR modding scene.

That policy was adopted due to confusing signals sent by the three entities involved (and the lack of clarification thereof):

- Lucas Arts, with whom LF was in close contact back then, had links to our site and did not discourage modding ;

- Bioware (despite LA linking to our LF site and entertaining other communication channels and Bioware having a link to Starwarsknights.com at the time) deleting anything mod related on their forums; and

- Obsidian not discouraging modding (Feargus even posted on LF shortly after Obsidian started working on TSL).

We tried to get clarification but always hit closed doors with Bioware (just a wild guess but maybe something in their contract with LA?). Anyway, given the lack of answers, we played it safe not to upset anyone and keep doors open for the future.
