Settlement Building and Decorations Guide

UPDATES: The article on the Creative Clutter mod will always be more up to date than this thread (I don't feel like maintaining both). Latest version: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/articles/384/

I've been working on a large clutter mod with Dinozaurz, Evanpox, and MsRae that will be called CREAtive Clutter. The mod combines all the cluttery bits of their current mods, new stuff they've created, Lazy Furniture (pre-decorated furniture I've made) and additional clutter I've made. The Lazy Furniture portion includes themed cluttered furniture: Prewar, Postwar and Institute. So I've also tailored my building and decor guide around supporting those themes.

We're finally wrapping up all the stuff needed to publish. One of the things that will be published as both an article and a downloadable PDF is a guide to the best settlement building and decorations mods on the Nexus. I'm publishing my current draft here for input. Yes, I know it's long.

General rules of thumb for inclusion:
-Structural building kits
-Cluttered objects
-Furniture
-Retextures that affect the above (but I'm not going to go overboard here)
-A few useful tools
Not being included:
-Mods I consider too buggy or lacking support (if needed)
-Wall decor such as flags, posters, artwork. There's just too many and it's too subjective.
-Mods that only add/change one or two items only
-Insufficient popularity
Most mods listed below are cross-referenced as appropriate, for example if it's both prewar themed and a structural building mod it will be in both categories.
The full list:
Prewar Themes

aesfocus's Renovated Furniture http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9463/

Crimsomrider's Clean Prewar Workshop Workbenches http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/18230/

Victorn2's Clean Settlements series http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/users/542978/?tb=mods&pUp=1

Postwar Themes
Most mods actually fit here, but I'm not going to list them all here, just a few stand-outs.

Ceano's Repaired Furniture http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10571/
Still has postwar textures. Just fixes things like broken drawers etc.

LupusYondergirl's Old World Plaids http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10769
Includes Cozy Beds and lots of texture variations of most of the furniture

Institute Themes

Ccmads' Settlement Objects Expansion Pack: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10075/
This mod has a lot of Institute themed structural components: Sign, walls, doors, etc.

Doobot's Craftable Institute Stations http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9715/
Institute themed workstations like armor, chem, weapons, food.

Sile's Modern (Institute) themed Magazine Shelves http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/8653 Modern Bobblehead - Robot Stands http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/8518/

Vault-Tec Themes

Darthwayne's Build Your Own Vault http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10603/

NightSoDark's Vault 88 Room Corner's Plus http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/17198/

Sirbalin's Vault 88 - More Vault Rooms http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/16896/

Structural Mods

ad3d0's Snap N' Build http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/7393/

Ccmads' Settlement Objects Expansion Pack: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10075/
This mod has a lot of Vault and Institute themed structural components.

Darthwayne's Build Your Own Vault http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10603/
Snapable Junk Fences http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9000/
Improved Shack Bridges http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/8905/
Ethreon's Vanilla Extensions mod overlaps with the Snappable Junk Fences and Improved Shack Bridges I think, so pick one author.

DDProductions83's AIO Standalone http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/16707/
Lots of unique stuctural stuff like a set of glass floors, walls, etc.; structural support pieces, castle build kit, tall walls/spacers, and more. Can also install standalone versions of most mods included in the AIO.

Ethreon's Bobs Iquana Diner http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/19133/ (Diner build kit)
Atom's Greatness http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/19857/ (Church build kit)
Vanilla Extensions http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10032/ (misc)

NightSoDark's Vault 88 Room Corner's Plus http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/17198/

PurpleRadiation's Interior Buildings mods http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/users/10990298/?tb=mods&pUp=1
Opens up closed buildings at several settlements and makes them useful. The Jamaica Plains mod will conflict with Rdunlap's Rebuilt Series if you use his AIO mod.

Sirbalin's Vault 88 - More Vault Rooms http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/16896/

StuykGaming's Bunker Builder http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/17485/
Modular Housing http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/15108/

Rdunlap's Rebuilt Series Prewar Houses: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9285
This mod rebuilds existing buildings at settlements.
Note of caution: The Gandalf Windows Repair and Cleaning Service module will cause problems with some window textures in game, most notably some of the walls in Goodneighbor will become see-through that aren't meant to be. If you use the AIO you can skip this option but not all of the standalone mods give you the option to use it without the Gandalf textures.

Robboten and kkthebeast's Snappy HouseKit: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/11639
Building kits to make a variety of house styles.

Secretagent99's Functional Displays http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/5080/

Steve40 and Flipdeezy's CWSS Redux 2 http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/14326/

Xgf's Immersive Vendors http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10039/

Everything and the Kitchen Sink

Novacoru's Homemaker http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1478/
Note of caution: This mod is HUGE. It adds over 1000 items. It may also have more compatibility issues than most of the other mods in this document due to workshop menu changes and/or use of SKE.

TroyIrving's Settlement Supplies Expanded http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1145/
This mod has significant overlap with Homemaker, it's probably best to pick one or the other. The good news is Ethreon has been added as a mod author and has fixed bugs and taken on the support role.

Retextures

83willow's Delightful Ivy http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10436/

bLaCkShAd0w's Evil Institute HD http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9537/
A dark theme for the Institute. Because this is a texture replacer, it *should* retexture the Institute versions of Lazy Furniture in CREAtive Clutter appropriately.

DrBrandt HD Retexture Pack - Miscellaneous Props http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/7003/

EoW Pre-War Books Retexture http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/13027/
This is really almost a must have, this will significantly improve your book stacks and other book related clutter items in our mod.

Inawe's Remove Flat Ugly Trash http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/19711

Scottyx2's Clean Diners http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/19196/

StuykGaming's Patch Job Fill Those Holes http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1934/

Brahmin Retexture mods

Ceano's Brahmin http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4681/
Cerb's Brohmin http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/17351
Uruchat's Healthier Brahmin http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/16802/
This is an exception to my not listing mods that don't add much because these fix the seriously ugly brahmin. I prefer the Healthier Brahmin version by Uruchat.

Useful Tools

DDProductions83's Increased Build Limit Enhanced 4k http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/13779/
Clutter will eat up a lot of your settlement budget. This mod is the safest, cleanest way to increase your settlement budget.

Dukemordred's All In One Settlement Solution http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/6304/
I just had to include this even though it's somewhat outside the scope of my own rules for mod inclusion. Basically this is the lazy person's cheat for settlement needs. I stick it up until I'm ready to actually work on building up a settlement. Adds virtual beds, defense, food, water, and happiness.

Korodic and Dovahklon's Multiple Floors Sandboxing http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/15608/

Shadowslasher410's Scrap Everything http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/5320/
This is a currently supported and technically superior scrapping mod. I recommend this over Spring Cleaning. Put it last in your load order.

Sharlikran's Settlement Keywords Expanded http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/12226/
If you HAVE to use some version of settlement keywords, this version has the best support. Note of caution: Using this means compatibility issues with a LOT of the other mods in this guide that are not designed to use this system.

TheLich's Place Everywhere (requires F4SE) http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9424/

Wenderer's Auto Doors http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/8457/

Thanks for that input! I fixed the link and added spoilers. I spent about 13 hours yesterday working on mod stuff and putting that guide together. I was pretty tired and not thinking clearly by the time I posted it. I had tried putting the entire list in spoilers but it wouldn't work with the bold/resized headers and I didn't think of splitting it up in multiple spoilers. lol that's what I get for working too long. :D

If I remember right you are using Outfit to make the meshes. It allows removing tris and other optimization processes? Cause your meshes will definitely use some if you make generic decorative clutter.

I make them in Outfit and then do a final error check and sanitize in Nifskope. But if you have suggestions on improving the meshes I'm all ears. We probably won't get them optimized this go round because we're too close to done to want to go through them all again, but we can update them for the future hopefully! We've already finished all the mesh work. Now we're packaging and doing content for the mod page.

I dunno if Outfit has functionality to reduce tri count aside for manually deleting them.. does it have statistics of any sort? Poly count, tri count, vert count etc.

Not that I can find in a couple minutes of poking around in all the menus and views.

What would really be great is more themed items for settlements.

Starlight Drive-In could have popcorn and other movie theater type stuff.

Red Rocket could be more of a gas station with convenience stuff on the shelf (gives me an idea for Do It Yourshelf).

Outpost Zimonja could use hesco barriers, concertina wire, and other Afghanistan military campaign type stuff.

Oberland Station could use some train themed items (like the railroad crossing sticks that come down (though the whole build could be opened up that is another can of worms).

Slog maybe needs some pool type stuff.

Maybe some Airport type stuff for Boston Airport though I can't think of what goes well with an airport right now.

A good idea would be more supernatural, horror and sci-fi items as befitting the quirky nature of Fallout.

I started doing some brainstorming of that here but only two others cared enough to comment: Themed Settlements.

I'm using this playthrough to build themed settlements and I actually use quite a bit of that list. I'll let you know if there is anything else I can suggest when I look through my list of stuff.

Here are some things for you to look at and consider if you want:

AWARHERO's Japanese Decor Pack You can see me use it here: YouTube Video

Castle Rebuilt The best Castle restoration out of the ones I tried.

I have some others which I don't know if you would want them, but longer power lines, longer wireless range, invisible furniture (animation markers), portable workshop enhanced, settlement garage sale.
