Texturing - Hair Ornaments Color

Hello :) Thought I'd try my hand at a very simple first "mod". I wanted to change the color of a hair ornament. I have photoshop and the nvidia dds plugin to open the texture files. I can see the part of the texture that is meant to be the ornament, but when I load my new texture into the game, the color gets changed according to the hair color slider.

 

How do I do this so that one part of the texture keeps its color and doesn't change with that slider?

That may be controlled in the .nif file. The ornament part of the mesh is likely setup so that it uses the whole texture when changing hair color, rather than its own texture or part of a different texture. Hard to say without knowing what model it is and taking a peek at how it's setup in the nif file.

Thank you for the response Vagrant. I'm editing hair16 from the Coolsims pack.

 

Someone on another forum pointed me towards the nif file as well and said that there should be black vertex colors used to mask off the part of the texture that doesn't get changed by the slider. Problem I then ran into was there was not way to mass edit the colors of the vertexes. I thought I'd download Blender and see if I could do it there but couldn't get Blender to open the .nif files even with downloading python, etc..

 

I guess it didn't turn out to be as simple as I'd thought :)
