Instant CTD. BOOM! Cannot even enter game world.

LOOOOONG time Skyrim player/mod user. Cannot even get past loading screen of a new game on a fresh, mod-free install with this 'Special Edition'. Main menu works beautifully. Loading screen sweet. Then BOOM. Black screen when I should be in-game. Horses and carriage sounds still playing. Cannot bring up Task Manager. Need to sign out to regain control of my PC. Coc Riverwood gives me the same thing. At a complete loss. Tried basic troubleshooting. GPU is set in Nvidia CP. Reinstalled twice. TESVEDIT checked. Everything I can think of. And man, I used to play Oldrim with over 100 mods PERFECTLY. It's gotta be something with Windows 10.

GTX 1080.
16GB RAM.
i5-4690k.

No issues when launching other games.

UPDATE: Interestingly, re-installing the driver software got it working for a while, however the same issue returned next launch.

Did you check integrity of the game, did LOOT in case there are mods in it? Maybe theres some mods in the stupid new in game mod library thing, idk what you have, im just suggesting ideas. Maybe uninstall the game fully and reinstall it?

I would be a fool if I didn't try these basic trouble-shooting tips before creating a post on this forum. In any case, I posted above that I have.

Okay, there are some thing you did leave out, and kindly understand we are not mind-readers and such.

One of the more obvious reasons is, you have a mod that is in conflict.

So, since I do not know all the steps you took:

Did you turn OFF ALL your mods, DLC's are not mods and I do mean ALL of them.

Does the game CTD?

If " YES " .. then your game is seriously corrupted and/or you do not have the DLC's loaded correctly.

1 Skyrim.esm

2 Updates.esm

3 Dawnguard.esm

4 Hearthfires.esm

5 Dragonborn.esm.

IF ' No ', the game loads.....

Then you have a mod conflict.

I'll post more pending your answer and I will be watching this thread to help if I can.

.. Jj ...

I wiped every skyrim folder and fresh installed twice and still it CTDs right after the loading screen ends. There were definitely no mods, scripts or missing masters. Just vanilla, fresh from the Steam servers.

Like I said, re-installing the driver software for my GPU allowed me to play. However upon re-launching the game again next day it had gone back to crashing the same way. A second re-install then got it working once more. And tonight? The same. It seems I have to re-install my driver again each time before I can play.

Mystery solved...

New Pascal GPUs apparently overclock themselves if they have the headroom... News to me. Apparently Skyrim didn't like what it arrived at. In any case, removing the overclock worked. No need to re-install drivers now, but at least I know that is why the driver re-installs fixed the problem... Unbelievable.

Guess the only question left is why wont Skyrim SE play nice with the change the GPU made?
