So, Do you play FO4 as a male or female?

I was talking to a friend the other day about FO4 and stated that I like playing a sexy female character in-game. This seemed to shock him a little. I mean he (and the other guy listening) had never even thought to play as female. Once I explained the "advantages"(ahem) of doing so, they understood. Besides this very base reason , I just like the sound of the female actress better. I also feel a female character more closely fits the role I usually play as a stealthy assassin. I mean women seem less likely to charge blindly into a dangerous situation. I have male companions such as Mcready and Danse, let's not forget Deacon and X6-88. But the males of FO4 seem to always have a very rigid stance on most subjects. Women seem to be a bit more "roll with it" and act more toward diffusing a tough situation rather than get piss-all mad about it. I guess what I'm trying to ask is if I'm really missing anything not playing as a male.

I play both. If nothing else, to see what options are different. The short answer is: not much in FO4. Unlike the other FO games, you don't really get different lines even when you take the Widow or respectively Killer perks. So essentially you're not actially missing anything.

I must say, though, personally I'm not really going for sexy with either. More like dapper *ahem* brain surgeon. You know, doing pro-bono lobotomies in .44 Magnum  Lately I've been kinda going with a wild west gunslinger kinda theme. Which I suppose is weird, since I never wore or used anything even remotely wild west themed in NV. I'm kinda the gaming hipster, I suppose

Anyway, on the whole, I think I've been playing more male than female, though I tend to pose my items more on the females than males. Still decently dressed, but I guess (or hope) a pretty face helps "sell" the item more than, shall we say, my Crazy Dave character. More of an amateur marketing thing, so to speak, than character preference.

Not sure it actually does help, to be honest, given how many female players they are around. But I guess it's one of the things that kinda stuck by tradition. Plus, it's easier to find pretty female face and texture sets to make a pretty female, than to find some handsome male models. I had to actually make my own Asgardian race for NV to have some decent looking males to show in screenshots.

As for gender roles, dunno, there are plenty of reasons to play any role with any character. I mean even the male character could have had sniper training or commando training or such.

Plus, as someone who's actually been in the army, I can tell you that one thing they invariably hammer in is NOT to charge in like an idiot, unless you actually want to come back in a pine box. No matter which branch of the armed forces you're in, you must act as a TEAM, not as a horde of individual heroes. Teamwork consistently defeated hordes of individual hero barbarians ever since we have a recorded history. For 5000 years straight, the guys who just charge in, lose.

And in the age of automatic weapons and artillery, doubly so. Suppression is the ONLY thing keeping the enemy from venting your brains, so no matter WHAT you do, you MUST have your team mates providing suppression fire, and you MUST do the same for them then. Charging in like an idiot just doesn't work. At all.

So your idea of men charging in like idiots... well, I won't say it's always off the mark -- Atom knows there are enough idiots who think they MUST act like a testosterone poisoning stereotype or the Manhood Police will show up with some rusty garden shears and revoke their right to pee standing -- but it's WAY off the mark for anyone who not only just was in the army, but is a veteran of an actual war. Charging in blindly should be the last thing Nate even thinks of doing. He should have a flashback of the drill sargeant wiping the floor (metaphorically speaking) with him if the topic of charging in even comes up at the pub. Hell, as a war veteran, he might even get a flashback of the last guy who played hero in China and got instantly riddled with enough 7.62x39 ammo that you could weight a boat with him.

Hey, thanks for the laugh Moraelin!

I was in the Army myself and I remember the training. Never any battle, though. I imagine you can't really compare reality to a "game". But, I do remember some guys with this idea in their head that they were somehow invicible. You know, win a few bar brawls and I'm KING-sorta thing. I guess its just part of being young. But I digress. There really isn't that much difference in the FO4 story between playing a male or female it seems.

You know, its understandable maybe for a guy to play a girl, But, I'm not sure what the appeal would be for the opposite. It would be great to hear some more women's opinions.

that's an interesting question!

it verges on discussions of continuity - what is 'canonical' in Fallout continuity?

some of it is a pastiche of many different endings, and what is a continuity of FO4 isn't continuity in the others...

I play GURPS and FORPG also, though FO3 onwards are fun too.

I enjoy playing Fallout a number of different ways,

robots are probably the most fun to play as, "tickets, please".

though ghouls and mutants are also fun.

supermutant enclave anyone?

Often, I'll do a 'master' "most altruistic" playthrough, and maybe some alternate ones.

FO3, I played primarily as a female BoS, with iridescent skin. and "Missa Kwong!", an asian prewar ghoul from a local camp near DC. Berty the Enclave Bot was also fun.

FONV: AfAm male "kookamungas" (he's named for a town in california). I tried to make him look like Dave Chappelle hehe. Enclave, and travelling conwoman... hehe.

FO4: Andrei and Panacea. Andrei resembles Brent Spiner, though with a phantom of the opera style rad-mutation. Protectron, and Protectron Disguise were also fun.

watching stuff like AIChestBreach or Petard is also inspiring as

to what folks can do in terms of roleplaying hehe.

In the videogames, there's no real discernable differences in the player avatars in FO4 as compared to other games.

the player character can carry the same weight, is as effective, etc.

whereas, in other games, especially the FORPG or GURPS,

there are differences to longevity (ageing conditions etc), health etc, and tag skills.

height, physical strength, carry, weapon effectiveness modifiers etc

charisma bonus distributions are different - females in the FORPG tend to have an easier time persuading mostly.

in the previous games, the protagonist was an 'everyperson' -

it could be adapted and shaped as the player wanted, and there were a lot more choices in

FO3 and FONV than in FO4 vanilla.

so, folks can play pretty much as

whatever they want. the aim of the game is fun.

(and lore/roleplaying for some folks).

that's where games are heading -

customizable scenarios, lots of choices, openworld and sandbox stuff.

Fallout is exceptionally unique, because you can replay it,

and there are so many different options.

its getting to a point where, there's more options than there will be time for you to play them all out hehe.

This question comes around here every now and again. It does look like you've gotten some serious answer on the topic.

So here goes: Whenever possible I play a female juvenile. All of my life I've wanted a daughter and never achieved my goal. Within the game I get a chance to create my daughter and live her life while watching over her shoulder. It takes a great deal of courage to be a girl. Traditionally girls are bred just to have more girls. In not so ancient Japan unwanted girls were left on a hilltop to die. My lovely girls are show that being a girl is not a detriment to life. Girls of old had to crossdress to have the same adventures as males. One of the reasons the English burned Joan of Arc was that she wore men's clothes in to battle. The pirate Calico Jack took a shine to the cabin boy who sailed with him as the cabin boy. To his delight he turned out to be a girl in disguise. The scat hit the fan when he found out that she was carrying out a relationship with another sailor. But he turned out to be a girl also. Calico Jack had a child with both of them.

They're tough, but they still carry a huge amount of compassion for others. My greatest adventures have all come by running little girls. Regrettably the mods don't seem to work well for me in Fallout 4.

If children are not available then I run young women. I have also run a young boy and an occasional man. Life was a lot shorter in medieval times so anyone wanting to be adventurer had to start fairly early. The great Alexander of Macedon who almost conquered the world died at the age of 35.

Men went off to war while women stayed home and took care of the farm and raised strong sons. Did you ever wonder why it is that men wore breeches and women wore skirts? That was so that the women could do their duty and have their child birthed out in the fields where they worked. That open bottom on the skirt was there for a reason.

I always play a male character in Beth games. In fact, I think the only time I've ever played a female character in ANY game was in AC Syndicate. It's because I kind of see my character as an extension of myself - he even looks like me. I admit it - it's wish fulfillment, pure and simple. But hey, isn't that a good reason for playing games?

When it comes to companions, however, I very much favour the women, along with Dogmeat and the robots. I'll only take a male companion in order to get his perk - and then dump him as soon as I do. I do, of course, spend a fair bit of time outfitting the ladies in my team.

I play as a female.

Primarily because women are more compassionate, sensitive and emotional than men and that's what I'm looking for. I want to feel and hear the emotion when the character speaks and I just don't get that with male characters. It does not apply to all games though. I could never play the Witcher series if it weren't for Geralt. He is one of the best written characters ever and he carries a lot of emotion with his subtle tone. The way he speaks carries so much depth and intensity of the emotion he wants to express.

I also play females because I grew tired of the stereotypical "Rambo mountain of muscle" bravado looking male characters. I'm sick of it. So since Skyrim,, I always play a female in any game where I can. I find them tender, gentle and agile, but extremely strong at the same time. I like the mix.

Another reason is because of the body shape and because a woman can wear anything while a man is always restricted to manly clothes. I enjoy creating female outfits because I can let my imagination go free because everything looks good on a woman. On a man, not so much.

A part of me also wishes that I was born as a female. So playing as a female in some extent allows me to simulate and experience what it's like to be a woman. I am an extremely curious person and I like to explore and experience the unknown.

I see a lot of people who express their distaste towards people who play a female character. Calling them perverts, virgins, no-life losers and whatnot. Mostly because when you go by the images, most of them are either naked or have their boobs hanging out. I personally don't care whether someone makes their character have breasts the size of planets (just look at the Supporter images, such a porn site), even though I find it distasteful. I will never say anything or criticize anyone for the way they play a videogame. I don't care how people play their game. I do however hate the other half of the spectrum where people are trying to impose their own mindset and moral values upon others. Insulting people because of the way they play a game.

I personally get rude comments and all that because all my outfits have a barefoot variation. And then people call me names, acting as if they've never seen feet before and jump to the wrong conclusions. Despite having countless of pages, books and websites teaching people how being barefoot is the natural way and the most healthy way of walking. Walking barefoot does a lot of the body and overall health. But unfortunately, people only see the pervert side of the Nexus and then insult people all the time because their minds are limited.

If people want to play a naked female with boobs the size of a planet, be my guest. If people want to play a male with his junk hanging out, be my guest. Playing with a hard-on is actually quite healthy for the body because it keeps it active. I personally don't find it compelling to make my character nude, but I also don't judge others who want to do so.

Yeah. When I wandered into the free city of Novigrad in Witcher 3, I was only like level 10 or 11 and quickly realized my mistake when in the first fight I had I got my ass handed to me. I kinda of stopped playing. But, more on point, Geralt is a great male character in a game series. It's too bad the writing in FO4 wasn't a little better. Still, I agree with you CrimsonRider in that playing a female character just seems to provide you with more options. But is a game supposed to be such a direct reflection of life? I mean what if I wanted to play a little cross-dressing. It would be pretty funny at least!! I also saw a mod recently where you can play as a hermaphrodite! Or maybe play as a robot. I could see playing as a ghoul too. I always thought it was funny to go into Moriarty's in FO3 and insult that poor ghoul bartender. What was his name?
