Can I lose a settlement?

Right now I focused on building settlements, as some new furniture mods were released recently. I've completed a quest from the Railroad, to find them a settlement for a safehouse and I'm planning to build something huge, using a mod which expands the building area, a mod restoring pre-war houses and some building mods I haven't used yet, like Snappy Housekit or Modular Housing.

I also convinced one settlement to supply the Brotherhood, but haven't reported to Teagan yet (cause I assume he would just give me another location). If one of these factions turns against me, will I lose control over their settlements and the settlers become hostile (like in Covenant)?

Be aware that at least some of the pre-war houses don't have a navmesh, so settlers may not be able to actually go in or out. So be sure to read the mod's information VERY carefully.

That said, back to the question, not sure about the BOS, but I haven't seen settlers turn hostile unless you actually attack them or do an attack on them for the raiders. It's also the only situation I've seen where I instantly lose a settlement: when you accept a Nuka World raider quest against them, they stop being yours. And without mods, if you make the settlement vassals to raiders, they stop being yours. They're just managed by the raiders instead of Minutemen though.

Even then, if you go hostile with the raiders, I don't recall seeing the settlers get hostile to you. Though of course, the raiders guarding the place WILL be hostile.

For BOS settlements, pretty sure you can get them back though, by just doing another minutemen quest for them. Essentially a BOS satttlement acts like an independent one, other than the fact that it just sent its crops to the Prydwen. It can then need your help against some ghouls or raiders or whatnot, and then they'll join the minutemen again. So if in doubt, you could just get your settlements back before going all aggro on the BOS.

Granted, it's been a very very long time since I gave a settlement to the BOS, so I may be mistaken or things may have changed in the meantime.

Edit: and, oh, Teagan isn't Preston. You have to actively ask for a quest if you want another destination. So you can just report back and get your reward.

RDunlaps "Rebuilt" series of mods restore some ruined houses but they are navmeshed so settlers can use them . There's a nice one for Mystic Pines. I think the biggest restored settlement would be the one for Echo Lake Lumber Mill which adds the large house which is by default outside the build area, and the shops so you have a very useful area.

Yes, I tested the Rebuilt Series Combined pack and it's great, but looks like have to move/scrap lots of buildings in some settlements first. What's more important: Settlement Expansion all-in-one was updated recently. It would be great to turn Jamaica Plain into a small city. But I acquired this settlement through the Railroad quest.

Pretty much. Or at least I haven't seen them go hostile unless I actually attack a settler or a brahmin or steal something.

Calling in an artillery strike also works. I did that once when I got tired of settlers and Brahmins standing on the roofs.

  • 1 year later...

Abernathy Farm is a troublemaker, in my game. Always the bed situation. Happiness at 16% lol. I assign the settlers, happiness back up to 50% after a while. Some "game" month later, they whine again. But it´s okay, i laugh about it.

Even when ignoring settlements altogether, I haven't had one "leave" or turn hostile. If your happiness drops really low, the existing settlers might head for greener pastures, but that's about it. The overall happiness is determined by a complicated combination of defense, food, water, & various other amenities, but I've rarely seen it drop lower than 20 even when I do nothing.

To get around it, I just get the "Happiness Jukebox" mod (not sure if that's the exact name), plop one down somewhere in the settlement, and that's that. It's basically a working jukebox or radio that slowly raises the happiness to 100 and keeps it fairly high. Cheating, yes, but far less work.
