Keeps freezing about 2-3 minutes after starting the first mission

I used to play it last year just fine. I re-installed it, but now it freezes in the middle of the first mission every time. I've tried:

1)re-installing

2)verifying from Steam, then re-installing the 1.0 Long War auto .exe mod file

3)offline mode in Steam

4)disabling Comodo fire wall

5)Not enable Steam cloud synchronization

6) Deleted any old save files

7) De-selected all second wave mod options

I've tried everything, I'm about ready to give up. It's especially perplexing because I was able to get it to work last year, but now it isn't after re-installing it.

Suggest you review the "Basic Guide to installing Mods" article to see if you overlooked something, starting with the "Checklist". You covered most of the bases, but didn't mention if you installed the game outside of the Steam default of "C:\Program Files" folder tree. Also, be sure you run up to the Main Menu of vanilla XCom twice BEFORE you install LW.
