The Dreaded Purple/Black Textures..

Recommended Posts

I have a problem, but this time I don't think I've ever came across something like this before. Basically, every time I'm playing Skyrim, once I see purple/black, I close and re-open my game to which I see that the problem goes away, until I see purple on something once again. I mean, I can live with it, since yesterday, my game would crash after a couple minutes of playing on every and any save, but I'd really like some options. I have over 230 mods, and I don't know how to give my mod list without having to copy and paste every single mod myself. But every thing is purple, not a select group. A crab would turn purple, the trees would turn black, clothes would turn black, and the carpet would turn purple. Like I said, I am fine with this if no solutions would help, but I'd really like some help.

You'd be best listing (under a spoiler) your mod list. Having a lot of mods, which are not properly sorted for loading is bad. As well, do you use outdated mods? Broken mods, perhaps? Do you use the Unofficial Skyrim patches? Perhaps your save files are also broken.

Did you use console commands for quest advancements? You should not have, if you already did.

As well, what are your hardware specs? Black textures indicate low VRAM availability. Purple textures indicate missing texture files and/or corrupted texture files.

Purple textures are usually a sign of missing texture files, but they CAN also be caused by lack of VRAM. If textures are missing entirely, always the same objects will be purple. If objects get purple randomly, it might be a VRAM issue. The fact, that the problem occurs after some time of playing, points in that direction - as well as the black textures.

Apart from getting rid of extremly memory intensive (i.e. large) textures, the general way to deal with such issues is carefully optimizing ini settings regarding memory usage, especially in the SKSE.ini and (if you use ENB) the enblocal.ini. As Zeroking already said, system specs, operating system and some input on additional software used (like SKSE and/or ENB) woudl be helpful.

As for the mod list: If you use LOOT (which is an absolute must with 230 mods!), you can easily copy your loadorder to clipboard and insert it here: Click on the three dots in the upper right corner, choose "copy load order", paste it here within spoiler tags.

The ones that are crossed out are the ones I don't use, either because MO gave me a warning of missing masters, or I found a better mod. I don't know why it's in alphabetical order, either. MO just does that every now and then, which works best with my skyrim now.
Edit: I forgot to mention that most of the ones crossed out are due to being unmanaged by MO, which were already on my game when I used to use NMM. I tried to open NMM again, but every time I download that new netloader thing that they've prompted me to download, it would mever go through. I don't use those mods, anyway.
Besides resetting my marriage quests to remarry other women, no, I have not used console commands to advance my quests. (Although my old save in which I was level 86 was over 2 years old)

Well, damn. If only I read your comment before copying all of my mods manually. I don't know how to carefully edit the ini, but I'll try to look around and see what can work for me.

To be honest, it doesn't always mean low VRAM. I have an 8GB VRAM card, with 16 GB system RAM...but people tell me that Windows 10 limits DX9 applications to 4GB VRAM and Skyrim is only built to be able to use 3.1 GB system RAM. I have seen black textures once in a blue moon with my mods, and run into purple textures all too often, which is solved by saving, quitting to start screen, and loading.

It appalls me that Skyrim can't take advantage of computer resources in excess of what were average even back when the game first came out.
