The particle effects/smoke performance issue: can it be solved by a mod?

Recommended Posts

It looks like lots of folks with medium-to-lower end machines (myself included) are capable of running everything on max settings with a smooth ride, except when it comes to particle effects, where a plummeting framerate or even crashing can occur. I'm running all up-to-date drivers for the dedicated (albeit low-end) AMD GPU on my laptop, so that isn't the issue. And from what I've read after doing lots of Google searches, no settings in the .ini file control this setting. I should mention that I've changed the "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=" option back and forth between 1 and 0, with no noticeable change.

Now, I know pretty much nothing about modding, but I'm curious: does anyone know of a mod that lowers the particle effects? Or, if one doesn't exist, is it even possible for mods to fix an issue like that, or is that a thing only the game devs themselves can address?

Anxious to hear if anyone has some insight on this. Thanks.

The Ini. File you are editing, is it on the correct installation folder of Kotor? Not next to the shortcut but in the actual file?

Try the hi res effect mod because it might actually be easier to run than a regular graphic that came with Kotor.

I can't run mine on high only because I'm on Android so I have to go with normal/medium graphics.

I had the same issue until I turned off shadows and downloaded the hi res effects.

If on a laptop Google "fixes for frame rate Kotor" or something similar to see if anyone has created a patch or if there is a known solution for when the Ini setting fails.

Don't lose hope. But I notice the Kotor questions aren't answered very often on this site anymore. Try seeing if Steam has forums addressing this as well.

Hope this helps
